Browns next coach could be...?

With the Browns 4-9 as they get set to play at the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night, the firing of coach Romeo Crennel seems like a foregone conclusion. If owner Randy Lerner isn't able to entice former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher out of the CBS broadcast booth, Lerner will have several options for Crennel's successor. He could consider a retread, a former coach such as Brian Billick, Marty Schottenheimer, Jim Fassel or Steve Mariucci. After the Butch Davis fiasco, most presume Lerner won't dip into the college ranks again and try to lure someone like Bob Stoops of Oklahoma or Jim Tressel of Ohio State.

Go Browns! Beat the Eagles. Signed, a Cowboys fan.

They could hire Butch Davis. He's turned that North Carolina football program around.

Somewhere Jim Tressel's reading this in a marble filled room with a harp player in the corner laughing his **** off. All the while he is fed grapes and fanned with giant palm leaves as the Buckeye supporters sacrifice the blood of the innocent so again they may have a BCS bowl.

Like Jim Tressel would leave OSU!!

I hear Charlie Weis may be looking for a job soon. :)

I really don't think the coach is to blame here. No huge changes in their roster. A favored team prior to the season. I think all of the players need to look in the mirror. One of those scratch your head and say "What the hell happened here". Like the Chargers and Jacksonville this year. What happened?

I'd like to see a win too, but I don't think we're going anywhere with Ken Dorsey under center tonight.

It's got to be either The Chin or Martyball. Those are the choices. Throw piles of money at them. If you can get them both, with one serving as GM, even better.

We added Dante Stallworth to serve as #2 reciever, who's had no impact. But Anderson and Dorsey taking most of the snaps this season, I don't blame him.

We added Shaun Rogers, who's been a beast, and Corey Williams from Green Bay to bolster the defensive line.

On top of that, we had the vast majority of last year's 10-6 team(easy 2007 schedule or no) return, and we're sitting at 4-9, probably 4-10 after tonight. Crennel has looked inept game after game. No disipline on this team. He's too much of a player's coach. Not to mention waiting until the season was in the toilet before finally yanking Anderson.

Our defense, a bright spot or two asside is still a joke, and the high octain offense that we saw last year has sputtered all year. It's time to pull the plug on the Crennel Era. He's had time, and with supposedly more talent on paper, he's managed to do even less. Bring back Cowher or Martyball!

Agreed. He's got no reason to leave his Empire in Columbus. Why take over a loser in the NFL, when you can be a God in the Big Ten, even if you get dusted in the national title game over and over and over.....

I'm not so sure here. Romeo is not the problem. Give him time, he will be fine.

I'd love to see Bill Cowher as coach of the Browns. I believe he would fortify the running game and bring a sense of toughness to the defense. The players would also respect and believe in him. I'm so ready for us to get rid of Braylon Edwards while he still has some value; keep Winslow, though he still needs to grow up, he is a good player and has tremendous passion for the game.

If they could get Cowher, that would be great for the Browns. I have no idea what the odds of that actually are though. If not Cowher, I would like to see Marty Schottenheimer get another chance. I think he is a great coach, who has consistently put together winning teams. I think he just had some bad luck in the playoffs. My third choice is a little out there... but I wouldn't mind Denny Green getting back into coaching. I don't see that happening though.

Martyball!!

December 15, 2008  12:21 PM ET

i wouldn't mind seeing billick as the coach. say what you will but he brought together a pretty awesome defensive coord while he was with baltimore. he won a super bowl as well.

December 15, 2008  12:27 PM ET

If Browns can get Cowher then bye bye Romeo. If not, then I think you give him one more year to see if he can turn it around. Browns started with 7 starters injured the first several games. But, IF and a big IF, they give him another year, I think Lerner needs to make it clear that Crennel needs to be more harsh on these players. They lack discipline and do not execute....and that is coaching!!

Cowher would certainly add to the spice of a Steelers -Browns game. I can see the spittle flying from the sidelines while the Steelers are ahead by five TDs in the third quarter and the Browns have already submitted their usual unconditioned surrender.
