A's back in running for Furcal

The A's are believed to believed to be back in the bidding for Rafael Furcal for about $40 million over four years. And it might be hard for him to turn that down -- or rather, turn that down again. While other markets have been slow, the shortstop market has been moving. If Furcal finally agrees to take Oakland's deal, the Dodgers may turn to Orlando Cabrera, who thrived two years ago with the Angels and has been one of the more overlooked players in this market. Furcal is believed to prefer a return to the Braves or Dodgers, but the Braves have young Yunel Escobar for shortstop and the Dodgers never planned to go longer than two years for Furcal, a terrifically-talented player who missed four months after back surgery last year.

I just read on MLB.com that the Braves are going to announce signing Furcal sometime today. Does anybody know what their plans are for him? Like this article says, they already have Yunel Escobar to play short. I'm guessing one will move to second base. My guess is it will be Furcal due to his injuries last year. Second base is slighty less physically-demanding than shorstop.

My guess is Escobar is still going to be traded for Peavy.

That was my guess as well, CardsFan2. Even though the Pads say Peavy is off the table right now, this may prove otherwise.....why else would the Braves need Furcal and Escobar? Unless they are going to trade Kelly Johnson and move Furcal to 2nd (really don't see that happening though).

its good to know that you don't see that happening. I was getting concerned.

GOING TO THE BRAVES!!!

Keep in mind that Kelly Johnson played outfield before moving to second a couple of seasons ago. Johnson could move to left, Furcal to second, and Escobar at short.

But I like the idea of a Peavy trade better. San Diego needs to move Jake at this point, and the Braves could use him at the front of their rotation.

Everyyear this a free agency slut...usually it was Kenny Lofton...last year Brian Roberts..this year? Furcal

Good ball player, but bad backs are hard to keep healthy, hope it works out for the Braves

you got it right

Where Furcal would be positioned defensively remains to be seen. But the Braves have no intention to trade either Johnson or Escobar. Instead, they are planning to move Johnson back to left field, a position he played before moving to second base before the start of the 2007 season.

per the Braves site

Atlanta's lineup would look pretty good with those moves, huh? Somebody has to get Peavy, though. He surely will not return to San Diego now.

December 16, 2008  03:48 PM ET

The Pads CEO Sandy Alderson said that the Padres were no longer actively seeking a trade for Peavy and that he will likely be with San Diego come opening day.

That's what he said right before negotiations got hot and heavy on trading Peavy to the Cubs.

Peavy will be traded this year and by far the best fit is Atlanta. Peavy won't worry so much about them trading Escobar now that they've signed Furcal. I know the Braves had a miserable season, but they are not as far from competing as you might think.

The Braves could be right in the thick of things next year. Their everyday lineup will probably be okay, especially if Franceour is alright. If the rotation has Jurrjens, Vazquez, Peavy and the young guys can hold the fort until Smoltz and/or Hudson and/or Glavine kick in, they'll be fine.
