Pettitte's mystery offer

It's been a mystery to many why veteran left-hander Andy Pettitte hasn't taken the Yankees' $10-million offer. But here could be a clue as to why he hasn't: Pettitte's people apparently are telling folks he has a $36-million, three-year offer from another, unnamed team. Pettitte, who didn't return SI's calls regarding his reputed offer, has been the Yankees' first choice for their final rotation spot after reaching agreements with high-priced free-agent stars CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett for $243.5 million in total. But it isn't believed that this $36-million claim has moved the Yankees to change their offer by even one dollar, which could indicate they question whether such an offer exists. There's no evidence that Pettitte has received a deadline yet from the Yankees. The well-respected longtime Yankee has made it clear that the Yankees are his first choice, as he's said he wants to pitch in the new Yankee Stadium. However, he did have one previous bitter breakup with the Yankees; that's when he went home to Houston and pitched for the Astros from 2004 through 2006. If Pettitte doesn't ever take the Yankees' longstanding offer, the Yankees will consider either making an offer to Ben Sheets or resuming discussions with Derek Lowe to round out their revamped rotation.

My gut feeling tells me you feel he should take it. Is that a proper assumption?

Take the 3 yr offer Andy. You won't be getting that from NY. You were a great Yankee but you faltered the second half of last year.

December 16, 2008  09:12 AM ET

Nice try, Andy. You better not be bluffing or you are gonna bluff yourself right into retirement.

I'm tired of Pettitte's "I'm not appreciated" attitude. Does he forget that the Yankees stood by him through this whole HGH mess and still gave him $16 million? With people out their struggling, it's disgusting that he even has to think about a $10 million dollar offer. I think $10 million after his massive collapse at the end of 2008 is more than fair and respectful. Obviously the pinstripes don't mean that much to him, so bye bye Andy - hope your mystery team loves you because NY doesn't anymore.

That mystery offer, if there really is one, has got to be from the Dodgers. You gotta know Joe would love to have him there, and if Lowe flies the coop, Pettite fits the bill perfectly.

Yankees offered Pettitte a one year deal for $10 million because they know he would not take it. This way the Yankees dont look like the bad guys... Pettitte does. NOW LETS GO GET SHEETS AND WRAP THIS THING UP!!!

I kinda think it might be from the Mets.....but the Dodgers might be dumb enough to give im 3 years (alot of $$ for them though- they are typically pretty cheap)

I agree with Yankee27 - Sheets should have hd an offer by now to fill the last spot. I'm just wondering if the Yankees saw something on his medical reports? I'd go to war with CC, AJ, Wang, Sheets and Hughes - leave Joba in the Pen as Mo's eventual successor!

was this a serious comment???? Something on the med report????? Ray Charles could see that there is something on this guys med reports. This guys x-rays look like France circa 1917 and you wonder if they might have found something?????

You have made everyone dumber by that string of words you slapped together.

Sounds like Scott Boras' ploy is catching on. Now everyone is trying to get teams to negotiate against a "mystery team" that has a supposed fantastic offer.

I agree. I could see a couple of other teams throwing an offer on the table, but this one makes the most sense. Pettitte should still have a few more years left in his arm.

word.... this is what the yanks rotaion should be. and joba is the cloer of the future, the boy is not a starter!!!

Got to love those mystery teams lol. Maybe it's Tom Hicks and the Rangers. They always need pitching and Andy would be close to home again.

If they can get another starter I would def put Joba back in the pen. You do that and your starter only needs to go 6 innings with Joba taking 7 and 8 and Mo closing it out in the 9th.
