The Pirates have inquired about two more free agents, super-utilityman Jerry Hairston Jr. and pitcher Daniel Cabrera. Hairston, 32, is coming off a career-best season with the Cincinnati Reds in which he batted .326 with six home runs and 36 RBIs in 80 games, this after having made the team in spring training off a $500,000 minor league contract. His .384 on-base percentage was well above his career figure of .330 and towered above his 2007 figure of .249. He can play any position in the infield or outfield, including shortstop, where he spent 34 games with the Reds this past season. The Reds, Philadelphia Phillies and three American League teams have been linked to Hairston this offseason.

This ought to put the Buccos over the top!

This must be a mistake. The Pirates looking to sign someone in free agency? Must be the end of the world.

Maybe they can pull Jay Bell and Andy Van Slyke out of retirement.

I think the Pirates and Nationals should just switch their teams, player-for-player, and see what happens. There's an economy of energy there that saves them the trouble of making all of these low-grade trades and acquisitions.

Hairston, there is another great pick up, reminds me of Matthews Jr, one good year and done

Cabrera could actually be solid in a new city with a new pitching coach. He has good stuff. It would not surprise me to see him succeed. Any team would do well to get Hairston. A guy that can play decently at that many positions is nice to have.

For a half-souses leprechaun you're pretty effin knowledgeable!!!!!!!!!!! Go operate some heavy equipment and really impress me

The Yankess sign Sabathia and Burnett...the Pirates sign Dinesh Patel and Rinku Singh.

Good teams look to sign Mark Teixeira, Pirates look to sign Hairston Jr.

Wonder what's wrong with baseball?

I think signing anyone with a name of Patel will be disappointed. Those fellas were born and bred to make slushies not patrol the outfield.

MLB should do like European soccer and demote teams like the Pirates and Royals to AAA until they improve.

December 16, 2008  05:56 PM ET

pittsburgh's owners could probably sign manny if they wanted to....but y would they want to? if they lose (which they will) the revenue sharing just puts money in their pockets for losing games and they keep the money they coulda spent on FAs.

Can this happen? Are they allowed to add players that might help them NOT lose 100 games?
