Patriots Pioli on Chiefs' radar?

Clark Hunt wouldn't identify any possible candidates to replace Carl Peterson as Chiefs general manager. Hunt, the Chiefs' chairman, did reveal a list of qualities he's looking for in Peterson's replacement. "I want somebody who's a shrewd evaluator of football talent," Hunt said. "(His) job will be 24/7 to think about the football team. That's the most important quality. Obviously I'm looking for a strong leader, a good communicator, preferably somebody who has experience in building a winning NFL team." Though he was speaking generically, he could have been describing Scott Pioli, New England's vice president of player personnel. Pioli, 43, could wind up as Hunt's primary target. With Pioli assisting coach Bill Belichick with personnel decisions over the last nine years, the Patriots played in four Super Bowls, winning three. Pioli has had many chances to interview for general-manager openings around the league and declined many. He could be lured by the Chiefs, who would likely offer the same autonomy to run the football operation that was given to Peterson. Pioli probably would embrace the emphasis on youth that Hunt said would continue in Kansas City.

As a Broncos fan I really don't like to hear this, he is one of the main reasons the Pats have been as good as they have been in recent years.

But as a football fan I'm all for making the bad teams better to make the league more competitive.

Why in the world would he want to leaver the Patriots for a mess like the Chiefs. I hope realizes the stability he has had for the last nine years.

December 16, 2008  08:36 AM ET

As a die hard Chiefs fan, Pioli would be a GREAT replacement for King Carl. Pioli would bring the New England way to a team in dire need of a jolt. It would be shameful if Herm was let go, but if that was the case, Josh McDaniels would be a great fit with the Chiefs too.

Pioli's name has been mentioned as a possible GM for at lease one other team. Is this guy really looking for another challenge or is this simply NFL scuttlebutt.

December 16, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Pioli is probably on almost every team's radar. He does a good job assembling talent.

December 16, 2008  09:48 AM ET

It must be December. all of the Team-X-is-luring-Scott-Pioli-away-from-the-Pats stories are circulating.

December 16, 2008  09:56 AM ET

Don't write it on a rock yet KC fans. Detroit has been talking to this guy for weeks already.

December 16, 2008  09:57 AM ET

Schottenheimer has expressed some interest in GMing (in the context of the Browns). I wonder if he or the Chiefs would be interested?

This day took forever to come.

Its party time in KC! Ding ****, THE KING IS DEAD! This is a bigger firing than Matt Millen by far. And thus the 20th year of the 5 year plan ends in the King's firing. GOOD RIDDENCE! Time to dream a little... Dare I mention the ultimate Chiefs fan's dream: Could we please fork over the cash now and bring Bill Cowher back to where it all began for him as defensive coordinator and make him our GM / Headcoach with Marty S. as the new assistant G.M. Surprisingly enough, I think it could work really well with Chan Gailey currently serving as our Offensive coordinator. I'm just so damn happy! CARL IS GONE!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate these damn "stories". He "could have been describing Scott Pioli". Yeah? He could have been describing Jesus H Christ too. If SI.com keeps putting up these "stories" that are nothing but complete speculation then they should change the URL to ESPN.com

December 16, 2008  10:43 AM ET

Pioli aint going anywhere

December 16, 2008  10:59 AM ET

The only offer Pioli will get that he can't refuse will come from the Pats.

December 16, 2008  12:00 PM ET

Coach Edwards should get the ole' heave-ho. He's as over rated as it gets in the NFL

December 16, 2008  12:35 PM ET

So far, Pioli has been offered the GM in Detroit, SF, KC, the NY senate seat, host of Meet the Press, a spot on the next Ryder cup team, the part of Tom Hagan in Godfather IV, Obama's Secretary of Human Cervixes, and Jebus in the 2nd Coming.

December 16, 2008  12:46 PM ET

Clark Hunt definitely has the money to lure Pioli away. The Hunts have also proven that they are loyal to thier coaches and front office personel. KC is much more attractive than Detroit. The fanbase is rabid, the sell out games easily, the stadium is in the middle of a state-of-the-art renovation, the team has a ton of cap room for next year, there is a lot of young talent and Hunt might just make Pioli GM and President if that is what it takes.

December 16, 2008  12:54 PM ET

I like coach Herm Edwards, but he hasnt gotten it done in KC. It may not be all his fault but with a new GM coming in; consider his tenure as done.

I couldn't have said it better myself... Bring back Marty and Bill, draft Sam Bradford and you have a new GM, HC, QB and a newly renovated stadium that is full again b/c of the excitement of Carl being gone and the guys who gave him his glory of the 90's back... CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES COME ON!!! IT'S A CELEBRATION!!! LOL....

What is wrong with this guy??? Did somebody wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning or what???

December 16, 2008  01:27 PM ET

And don't get me wrong I would take Pioli as GM and Brian Billick as Head Coach but Herm is definately not a good coach... Talent scout yes, which was his first job with the Chiefs, but Head Coach never again... ;-)
