Barkley pushed Auburn to hire Gill

While initial reaction to the Gene Chizik hire ran cooler within the Auburn community, Charles Barkley took it personally. Following Tommy Tuberville's departure, he called Turner Gill, who just finished a strong three-year run at Buffalo, to discuss the vacancy. In three years, Gill transformed Buffalo from one of the nation's worst programs into the MAC champions. Barkley subsequently went on radio and television in Alabama to push Gill's candidacy. "He is a hell of a coach," Barkley said. "I never want them to just hire a black coach just because he's black. I wanted them to hire a black coach for two reasons. Number One, Turner Gill can coach his **** off. But also, with those [top-flight] coaches who are in the SEC now, we need a recruiting tool to bring to Auburn. We do need that." Jacobs quietly went about interviewing at least eight and as many as 12 candidates for the job, including TCU coach Gary Patterson, Tulsa's Todd Graham, Ball State's Grady Hoke and Georgia assistant Rodney Garner, an Auburn graduate. Only Gill and Garner are black. Barkley said he discussed Alabama politics, race and sports history with Gill. He also dismissed that Gill's mixed-race marriage should have been an issue and he wonders now if in the final run, Gill ever had a chance. "I don't know the answer to that," he said. "But I got to tell you, if you just put their resumes side by side it's not even fair."

One of the few times I agree with Barkley. No way does Chiznik deserve the job, but time will tell if Auburn made the right decision. Wish Gill would have went to Syracuse!

Still trying to figure out the logic behind the Chizik hire!

December 16, 2008  08:17 AM ET

I think a lot of people are trying to figure out the logic behind this hire. There had to be better coaches looking to coach in the SEC then Chiznik.

December 16, 2008  08:29 AM ET

Barkley has a point side by side, coordinator stints aside, its not even close. chizik being a coordinator with some success has nothing to do with his record as a head coach. perhaps the powers that be in aurburn are just that inept. u fire a coach who has had great success through the years and then hire a coach that has had zero success and has been in essence a failure at the head coaching position. its beyond me

December 16, 2008  08:30 AM ET

I rarely dip my toe in the Barkley waters, but I'm diving in on this one. Barkley hit the nail on the head. And this is one of the few times he's right for bringing more light to the situation. If you take the names off of the resume and compare them, Gill's would've got chosen 10 out of 10 times.

December 16, 2008  08:42 AM ET

Auburn must be hoping for lightning in a bottle. If this coach becomes successful they will appear to be geniuses for seeing his potential.

The hire certainly does not appear logically sensible.

December 16, 2008  08:51 AM ET

I think if there was any racism involved in probably came from the alumni. My buddy that went to Alabama said that the school would have hired Sylvester Croome over Mike Shula but some alumni threatened to not support the program if they hired him. Now neither coached impressed when given a chance but it's the principle of having alumni do you in that's just wrong. I hope this was not the case at Auburn.

December 16, 2008  10:06 AM ET

You've gotta love it when your 2nd most famous alumnus calls his school a racist school.

Hey recruits, are you listening?

December 16, 2008  10:21 AM ET

Did they have to use that moronic picture of Barkley? Are they trying to make him look like a loon?

When I see that, it makes me think.... "Whaaaazuuuppp???"

December 16, 2008  10:25 AM ET

I think Auburn did Turner Gill a favor by NOT hiring him. I cannot recall the name of the Auburn booster who met with Petrino behind Tuberville's back a couple of years' ago, but Auburn looks like it will be a mess for a few seasons and I think Mr. Gill will be better off, NOT being part of the Auburn (getting their butts kicked by BAMA) fiasco.

December 16, 2008  10:44 AM ET

Since when did Charles... Start pushing anything... That didn't have to do with casino chips.... Or the buffet table???

December 16, 2008  11:04 AM ET

1) Chiz may be a weak hire. His results at ISU were uninspired. He certainly was a surprise.

2) TGill has done a great job at Buffy. He WILL get a shot. He deserves interviews at the very least.

3) This is just Chuck running his yap as usual. He has NO idea how Gill interviews, what the fit would be like, what kind of a recruiter he is etc. In other words, TGill should definitely be right for some big time program. It may or may not be Auburn. Chuck has no clue. Eat another donut, Chuck.

December 16, 2008  11:07 AM ET

Hate him or love him but he's always right.

December 16, 2008  11:07 AM ET

I don't know about this hire, whether it was good or bad...but it gets a little tiring when the same black athletes whine and moan about racism in sports. This has been a Barkley mantra for years. The NHL changes coaches on a weekly basis, yet you never hear about lack of minority hirings there.

If race is such a factor to Barkley, maybe he should have made his millions in an industry that is made up mainly of black laborers and management. Oh wait...he did. Did he ever complain that there were not enough whites in the NBA? What about black history professors at Auburn? or Chemists? Seems to me that Barkley sqwaks racism only when it concerns blacks in athletics and only when the athletes or coaches are black. Racism? Charles in charge certainly should know the meaning of the word. He practices it so well.

Bobby Lowder, owner of JetGate, Inc (and God of Colonial Bank)

rumor has it he is using his share of the financial market bailout package to pay severances to the many dismissed coordinators, coaches and Tubs. now he has to earmark $750K to pay Chiz's payout. Your tax dollars hard at it folks. (Satire, no real rumor)

December 16, 2008  11:43 AM ET

Auburn will only decline from here. What exactly has Chiznik accomplished? I cannot believe Gill isn't getting more serious offers.

December 16, 2008  11:58 AM ET

Sir Charles is right. Auburn can't explain or justify hiring a coach with a seriously bad W-L record. The SEC will eat him alive.

December 16, 2008  12:01 PM ET

Auburn,

Are you not the least bit concerned that Chiz parlayed his tertiary success at Auburn for a LATERAL move to Texas, thus stating for the record, "You can't win a championship at Auburn"?

He was one and done at Texas after the NC, which by the way, did not play stellar D, but had an awsome offense, leaving for Ames and a program that had enjoyed mild/relative success prior to his arrival. Suffice it to say, from an ISU standpoint, the cupboards were not bare.

He proceeded to win 5 games over two years, none over a winning team, 3 over I-AA programs. Promised his AD and his players that he specifically would not leave ISU for Auburn and does less than 24 hrs after making that statement.

Now he says he's home, which is EXACTLY the words he used in Ames less than 5 days ago.

I have no love for Auburn (short of Bo, he is one of my all time favorite athletes), but you guys got a shyte casserole of:

1 part Weis (over inflated capability)
1 part Shula (extremely unprepared for the task)
3 parts Fran (hold the rope!)
2 parts Greg Robinson (Texas coach that loses horribly outside the ranch)

The only upside anyone can bring up is the 2004 season and he left you after that for the same position at UT.

Why aren't you guys taking a page from LSU and burning your AD in effigy?

he should shut up
