Furcal going to Braves or Dodgers?

Rafael Furcal's negotiations are one for the books. The Braves think they have a deal in principle for the free-agent shortstop. "A gentleman's agreement,'' is what one Braves person said. It's believed to be for $30 million over three years. However, Furcal was said to be still talking to the Dodgers Tuesday evening, hours after the Braves suggested a deal was done with them. The Dodgers are believed to be interested in re-signing Furcal to a two-year deal with an option. So to recap, Furcal rejected a four-year deal for about $40 million with the A's to talk to the Braves about a three year deal for $30 million with a vesting option (and according to the Braves, agree to that deal). And after allegedly wrapping things up with the Braves, he's believed to be talking to the Dodgers, mostly likely about a two-year deal with an option. If he takes a two-year deal with the Dodgers, he will be the first player ever to reject a four-year deal to take a three-year deal for a similar annual salary only to reject that for a two-year deal for a similar salary. If this keeps up, the next stop would be a one-year deal. This has been a tough one to call from the start. But the best guess now is that he sticks with the Braves. He has a home in Atlanta, and after all these negotiations, probably could use a rest.

Sounds like a reverse auction. Less is more!

But hey, in these topsy-turvy financial times, who's to say this doesn't make sense.

I'm a Braves fan, and I don't want him. He's not worth the money.

December 17, 2008  08:38 AM ET

Whoever signs him needs an incentive contract based on number of at bats. He's well worth the money when healthy. No one is worth the money on the DL.

He's going to the dodgers because he can't be sure to play short with the Braves. Why would he want to play 2nd?

I have to admit that the Braves have already whiffed so many times this Winter, I don't know what the **** is going to happen..... but if Wren botches this "Gentlemen's Agreement", then the grumbling will start getting louder.....

If they trade Escobar to play Furcal I might find another team.

The Orioles should have tried harder to get him and not sign Izturas...

Will the Braves trade Escobar, Francuer and two prospects to the Royals for Grienke and Guillen. Makes since for both teams if Furcal signs. Gives the Braves a top notch SP and power righty in middle of the order. Royals get a MI they are looking for plus free up money.

Why not?
Besides Guillen being a head case they get one of the best young pitchers who isn't a FA for two more years.
Vazquez, Grienke, Jurrjens, Campillo & Reyes and gives them options on what to do with Hanson.

... and the twist... he ends up in Toronto

December 17, 2008  02:59 PM ET

Now his agent says Dodgers, What a moron, he is going to screw around and he is going to be stuck with a crappy team for a minimal contract....serves him right

December 17, 2008  03:16 PM ET

I guess no trade if he signs with Dodgers. I would be have tempted to pull the offer if I were Wren.

December 17, 2008  03:28 PM ET

We don't want him back in Atlanta. Go after the damn pitching, Wren...

Wasn't Izturis a good player for teh Dodgers?
