How OU will handle Murray's absence

Oklahoma's record-setting offense will be without its most versatile player Jan. 8, when the Sooners play Florida in the BCS national championship game in Miami. Starting running back DeMarco Murray, the team's all-purpose yardage leader (2,171), will undergo surgery Monday and won't play in the title game. The sophomore from Las Vegas has a partial rupture of a hamstring tendon in his left leg. The Sooners' depth at running back will help them replace Murray. Junior backup Chris Brown will start, and third-team sophomore back Mossis Madu will see more playing time. Brown, a power runner, leads OU with 1,110 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns on 195 carries. Madu has rushed for 463 yards and six touchdowns on 111 carries. Brown and Madu both topped 100 yards, and each scored three touchdowns against Missouri after Murray was injured. Brown also replaced Murray on kickoff returns against the Tigers, and Madu lined up at slot receiver at times in that game.

Sad that it happened......but better to have it done now so that the team can figure out a gameplan without him.....

December 17, 2008  08:33 AM ET

he's a BIG piece to be missing and that my friends is an understatement! that being said we'll come out focused and ready to roll in January NO EXCUSES!

December 17, 2008  09:10 AM ET

Sad that he can't play but as long as Bradford is healthy it shouldn't matter. Brown and Madu are both good enough to fill in.

With that said...rooting for Florida.

December 17, 2008  09:16 AM ET

Good player, but I can't see it slowing them down that much

December 17, 2008  10:07 AM ET

WELL... This opens up the excuse window... Most OU fans still think that they lost to Texas because Reynolds got hurt... But I think Chris Brown will show that he can... run it, run it... lol I crack myself up

I feel bad for Murray missing the NC game, however, he hasn't been the same since last year's injury vs Texas Tech. Watching him this year it appeared that he lost a step (maybe two) and never really got it back. He showed spurts later in the year, but the home run step he had last year is gone. The only aspect the Sooners will miss will be his game experience and hands out of the backfield. Saying that, I think Madu can more than handle the situation and we will have no excuses going up against the Gators January 8.

Boomer Sooner!

P.S.- Oklahoma State coach Mike "I'm a man...I'm Forty" Gundy should be the Big 12 and national coach of the year. The Cowboys were expected to be 6-6 (7-5 at best) and what he has done this year should be rewarded.

Guess it would be comparable to Florida missing Percy Harvin in the Alabama game. Skill people are usually interchangable at big-time schools. They all seem to run 4.4 and bench press 300 pounds anyway.

I dont feel that Madu can just step in. He just isnt as good or as explosive as Murray.

Not as BIG of an excuse as: Colt (he didn't win the Hesiman 'cause he didn't play an extra game) McCoy.....

December 17, 2008  11:11 AM ET

I hate that Murray can't play, he's honestly the only Sooner that scared me. So now when they lose the excuse machine will be in full effect.

I haven't seen or heard of this excuse... I do remember Colt on tv talking with Krik and he said that he can't blame anyone... If they had took care of business, they would not even have been talking about it

colt was definitely the bigger man for saying this. if only UT fans were the same.

UF fans, or at least those rooting against OU, who say the excuse machine is gearing up...at least have the sense to wait until after game is over and UF is the victor. murray isn't the sole offensive weapon on OU's squad, which has other backs, upperclassmen receivers and a stud tight end in gresham.

December 17, 2008  12:05 PM ET

yep, you're gonna miss that burner...The guy has incredible speed. He leaves a smoky trail on the field but I'm sure the Sooner's are stacked in that position no?.

December 17, 2008  12:07 PM ET

P.S. Why is he doing KO returns for? Obviously too risky....

Before the game it wasn't that big of a deal. After the game it was a huge deal and Florida "would have blown Alabama out if they had had him and others".
