Angels interested in signing Manny

Agent Scott Boras might have the delicious bidding battle he craves for Manny Ramirez. The Yankees admit an interest in the controversial free-agent slugger to bolster a lineup with holes. Now the Angels appear to have Ramirez in their sights if they lose Mark Teixeira, who has offers from the Angels and Nationals and is wanted by the Red Sox and Orioles. The Yanks are monitoring Teixeira, but some believe it's only to drive the price up on the Sox. To Boras, who also represents Teixeira, and Ramirez, it's nirvana to get the Steinbrenner family and Angel owner Arte Moreno, involved since they may be the only rich people not affected by the miserable economy. However, the Yankees are not interested in a five-year deal for the 36-year-old Ramirez, who would have to play right field. That would make Xavier Nady expendable. Or the Yankees could attempt to deal Johnny Damon or Hideki Matsui, each of whom will make $13 million next season.

I knew the Yankees would come to regret the Damon signing eventually.

Memo to Steinbrenner: There are no quick fixes in baseball or business my friend.

I hope Manny sticks with Dodgeball in 2009.

No one is going to go five years on this guy. If the Angels sign him it is because they lost out on Teixeira, which does not make them better. I think the only battle Boras has is to find a team that will take a chance on two years with the guy. The Yankees will say the have an interest in any big name player, does not mean they want him.

I agree with all except the 5 year part. (I think the Angels would look at 5 years to land him.) But yes, the Yankees don't really want him. I think they are involved with both (manny and tex) to drive up the price for Boston and the Angels.

You could be right. But that is a lot of years for a guy with a history of turning on his team when he is not happy...What are the chances of the guy being a "team" player for five years?"..It will cost some GM his job someday.

Teixiera will sign with the Red Sox or Angels sometime this week. I know thats not going out on a limb or anything. Don't have much else to say except Scott Boras must be one rich MF.

I think if the Angels lose Tex they have to go after Manny, just not for 5 years. I think they would probably offer a 3 or 4 year deal and then extend Vlad for the same. If they sign Tex no idea if they extend Vlad or maybe go after Holiday next year.

Manny will get approximately what he walked away from in Boston.

The question is who will be foolish enough to give him a disappointing contract?

December 17, 2008  08:01 AM ET

angels will sign tex or manny, with the A's actively grabbing players and filling up holes, they have to in order to stay competitive. tony reagins seems to be pretty active GM (trading O.C and signing Hunter last season) so hopefully he can continue that trend. itll be pretty cool having manny and vlad in the same lineup for a few seasons.

I agree, Tex or Manny hopefully Tex like him better for the long term. I'm just not wanting him to go to Boston anywhere but Boston. We'll see soon.

I guess I would get some satisfaction if the Yankees trade Johnny Damon. I'm sure he'd like to stay in NY.

Good Morning, I'd prefer that he stay in NY. That would guarantee at least one rag armed out fielder who needs two cut-off men to reach home plate with a throw.

So far only about 3 inches I'd say.

That's about twice as much as I have so far. As for the roads, I have a truck with a plow so it takes about a foot to bother me. I'm hoping for another inch so I can go make some $$$$.
