Labonte needs a ride

Bobby Labonte has driven for four Sprint Cup teams in his 17 years in NASCAR's biggest series, and after signing a lengthy contract extension this year with Petty Enterprises, didn't plan on a fifth. Now, just months removed from the conclusion of that deal, he finds himself out of work and without a concrete plan for his future for the first time in his career. Labonte knows the timing is bad, particularly with the few unfilled driver openings left this time of year in addition to the bad economic situation in the country as a whole. He admitted interest in the still-unfilled driver opening in Earnhardt Ganassi Racing's No. 41 but maintains he is a free agent -- one that still has a desire to compete.

i feel bad for the guy but you make your bed , you sleep in it. what the hell was he thinking when he decided to sign with the pettys? they havent been competitive in decades and his last contract with them should have told him that. hes a better driver than that

Labonte liked the family atmosphere of the Petty team prior to being bought out by Boston Ventures. He is a good driver, but maybe he's at a point in his career that being happy and in a family atmosphere is more important than being in a top ride. Bobby also thought he could be one of the missing parts that could help bring the Petty brand back to the top.

I thought I had heard a report out that Labonte had signed a contract with Earnhardt-Ganassi to drive the 41, guess that was another rumor.

From Sirius Speedway:
Bobby Labonte will drive the #41 Target Chevrolet for Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing in 2009, joining Martin Truex, Jr., Juan Pablo Montoya and Aric Almirola as part of a newly merged, four-car team.

Labonte has not commented since announcing his split from Petty Enterprises last week, and the new Earnhardt-Ganassi operation remains in a virtual media lockdown. However, multiple sources close to the situation tell Sirius Speedway that a deal to put Labonte in the #41 is signed, sealed and delivered, after receiving the approval of sponsor Target. Work has already begun on the necessary promotional infrastructure -- photo shoots, marketing campaigns, ancillary programs, etc. -- for the coming season.

Good for Bobby!

If in fact Bobby LaBonte is now at Earnhardt Ganassi, that is a pretty darn good group of drivers. Now the only question that remains is whether sweet Theresa can deliver equipment good enough to match the talent. But this deal is good especially for Bobby

Shy....the DEI RCR engined cars have got to be an improvement over the PE Dodges....Dodge's competitiveness has dwindeld in the last few years and it never was great except for a few shining moments now and again.

Teresa, (the witch), has got to do the right thing, and save face, I hope.

December 17, 2008  09:01 PM ET

Truex is a very good driver, don't care for Almirola but I think JPM is going to be a force to be reckoned with in Nascar. He was having some good runs towards the end of last season and if Labonte becomes a mentor to him, that could be pretty good for JPM.
FLOAT;I think without total control and some people with racing blood advising her, she might make some decisions that make sense. I hope.

Teresa does racing blood. I just hope the rest of the people working in the company do as well. I hope Bobby gets a good car and people working with him. I'm still bitter because I think Bobby got a lousy deal his last season at JGR.

"Tresas does everyone thats the problem." LOL I need to proof read a little better.

Anyway, she was good enough for Dale Sr so either she's not as bad as some make her out to be or Sr was a ***** whipped nit wit.
