Meyer tries to explain Notre Dame dream

In an emphatic effort to clear the air, Florida Coach Urban Meyer twice said on Tuesday he plans to be in Gainesville a "long, long time." This served as a follow-up to his comments on a South Florida radio show last week that Notre Dame was "still my dream job, that hasn't changed." Charlie Weis is still Notre Dame's coach, and the Gators are busy fighting for a second national title in three seasons. Meyer didn't refute that Notre Dame might always be his dream job, but he said it's a product of his Northern upbringing. "Our staff has given our life to Florida football for four years," Meyer said. "We plan on giving our life to Florida football for a long, long time." Gators Athletics Director Jeremy Foley told the Orlando Sentinel he has "no concerns" about Meyer's comments. "I know how Urban feels about the University of Florida," Foley said. "He has a tremendous amount of respect for Notre Dame."

I think that Coach Meyer is being honest -- he was giving his "standard" answer about ND being his "dream job" -- without really thinking about that answer. HOWEVER he is happy at UF and has no intentions of leaving as our coach for years and years! Go Gators!

Meyer, what a **** idiot! It's certainly ALL about him ain't it?

When Harvin a Tebow are gone, Notre Dame will probably offer him the keys to the Mansion. That's why they're sticking with Jabba right now. He will be easy to fire after next season, leaving them to court Meyer. It will be interesting what happens then.

That's how I see it coming down also.

I agree. The thing with dream jobs is that you eventually take them. Urban has done very well at Florida but I can't see him staying there forever.

When Notre Dame finally tires of Weis they are going to go to Urban and offer him the keys to the Kingdom.

Some in Gainesville say he won't leave until his children are grown.

December 17, 2008  09:42 AM ET

in other words: I'm out of here the minute that job opens up in southbend.

December 17, 2008  09:44 AM ET

Florida is a stepping stone job whether Gator fans want to believe it or not. There is but one job in the SEC that is a career job, and it is currently in the hands of Nick Saban. Urban Meyer will be the next head coach of Notre Dame soon. It is quite obvious that Florida playing in the national championship game is THE only reason he is not in South Bend right now. The Irish are very talented but poorly coached and Meyer knows it. Florida fans better hope TIMMY! stays around for another year and plays for a title next year or you will be saying goodbye to Urban.

That was his quote, but define "grown".

I think Tebow is back next year and the whole thing comes to an end next season. ND will hang on to Jabba for one more season and the pieces fall evenly.

Hate to say it, but when you've got a square peg and a square hole....

It might be a stepping stone job for Meyer, but you are a fool if you think it isn't in the top 10 gigs in the country. I would hardly call it a stepping stone job in general.

Your summation goes to pot with the "better hope TIMMY stays around for another year...or you will be saying goodbye to Urban". Urban will coach UF next year whether Tebow leaves or not. The real factor in Urban leaving will be if Jabba gets shytcanned next season. If he does, there is a real good chance that Meyer is gone, if not, I'd bet the ranch he stays - sans Tebow.

December 17, 2008  10:20 AM ET

What ever. Say it now and jump ship tomorrow for more money if it's offered some where else. I think he said the same thing a Utah.

The Florida job is a borderline top ten job, but make no mistake, it is still a great job. As for next year, if you read closely, you will see that I never said that he would not be coaching next year. He most certainly will be. What I implied is that if TIMMY! leaves early, Florida has no shot at the national championship game next year and he will certainly be gone. The only reason he is still at Florida right now is because he is in the title game so you should go thank Oregon State and Iowa for pulling off the two biggest upsets this year because if they didn't, UF would be in New Orleans in a matchup featuring two of Urban Meyer's former employers.

December 17, 2008  10:41 AM ET

If a by a "long, long time" you mean till he beats OU and an NFL team offers him crazy jack then I would agree with you.. He will be there a long, long time.

December 17, 2008  10:52 AM ET

Even as an ND fan I don't see him leaving UF anytime soon. He may just be "teasing" with the ND comments (as CW did at ND in 2005 with NFL rumors) for even more long term security with the Gators. He may admire the job in South Bend but the realities of winning there compared to where he is at are certainly not lost on him...in my "humble" opinion.

December 17, 2008  11:04 AM ET

He would be crazy to leave UF ...... Florida is a recruiting hotbed and he owns that state right now.

In Regards to your belittling comment, before you open your mouth and then put off the perception that you ???the truth??? is needing to go to the crack house. Maybe do a little research.

Boomer Sooner are two mascots of the University of Oklahoma and its sports teams the Oklahoma Sooners. The main mascot present at football games is the Sooner Schooner, a Conestoag wagon, pulled by cr??me white ponies, Boomer and Sooner. Prior to the 2005 football season two new mascots, based on the ponies who pull the Schooner, were created. These new mascots are named, appropriately, Boomer and Sooner. They are humans dressed in costumes of two identiacal (except for eye color) cr??me white ponies.

Also Boomer Sooner is the fight song for the University of Oklahoma written by Arthur M. Alden in 1905. The tune is borrowed from ???Boola Boola???, the fight song of Yale University. An addition was added a year later from University of North Carolina???s ???I???m a Tar Heel Born???.

Lyrics
Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner,
Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner,
Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner,
Boomer Sooner, O-K-U!
Oklahoma, Oklahoma,
Oklahoma, Oklahoma,
Oklahoma, Oklahoma,
Oklahoma, O-K-U!
I???m a Sooner born
And a Sooner bred,
And when I die
I???ll be Sooner dead.
Rah, Oklahoma! Rah, Oklahoma!
Rah, Oklahoma! O-K-U!

On last comment Oklahoma is recognized as the Sooner State.
