Why Penn State extended Paterno

The new deal was further vindication for Joe Paterno, who through good years and bad, good health and bad, has continued to insist he will continue as Penn State's coach as long as he enjoyed the job. It also reinforced the central fact in the entire Paterno conundrum, which has hovered uncomfortably over the program for at least a decade: No one at Penn State, except perhaps his wife, Sue, is powerful enough to force the hand of the man who has won two national championships and a record 372 games, and brought athletic glory, increased reputation, and hundreds of millions in donations to what was once a remote agricultural school. Bill Schreyer, the former Merrill Lynch executive, Penn State board of trustees chairman emeritus, and a major donor to the school, is a close ally and acquaintance of Paterno, as are the bulk of the 33 current trustees. Tim Curley, the athletic director, who along with university president Graham Spanier made the decision to retain the coach, is a former Paterno player. So are five of the members of the board of trustees, the body that oversees the school's operations but that was happy to grant the decision-making power in this case to the president and AD. Even Paterno's increased frailty - a broken leg in 2006 and this year's hip injury, which forced him into the coaches' box and the operating room - couldn't change anyone's mind.

Narrow-minded rich white men, aka. the boosters, alumni, big-time athletic department donors, threatened to pull back on donations if anyone else was considered to be head football coach in Happy Valley.
That is why.
End of story.
This is how it goes in big-time college football in too many places.
Take a look at San Diego State and Auburn for cripe's sake as most recent atrocities

Joe's shooting for 400 wins.

He's in an attrition contest with 'ol Bob for the #1 spot. He'll not leave unless it's toes up.

I wouldn't go that far....sure there was probably some boosters and current trustees that voiced their opinion and clout towards retaining JoePa. But for what reason?

Look at the current situation as a whole picture. Post #1 points out the accomplishments that Penn State had THIS year. Very impressive for a team that was supposed to contend for 4th in the Big10.
But also look at the body of work that JoePa brings each and every week, as he has been since 1950. The reason why these boosters, alumni, and trustees voiced an opinion to keep JoePa is because of what they know first-hand. Kids are being "finished" at Penn State. Every player soundbite or article states about how great JoePa was towards their personnal development and education. That's hard to put a price on.
Add that to the monsterous 12(soon-to-be) win season, yes, the millions of dollars he helps bring in, the national attention, and the very fact that JoePa still rolls up his pants and gets dirty teaching these young men the game of football....it's a no brainer why they kept him.

JoePa still has plenty to offer from many different levels. Throwing out the likes of SDSU or Auburn is a bad comparision to the icon of JoePa/Penn State. Tuberville was a good coach by far. However that situation has nothing to do with Penn State. Tuberville got a $5.1 million steamroll. The smart ones at Penn State made sure that wouldn't happen again to a coach and humanitarian that is an asset in every way.

I guess I'm asking you to think of what is better for the team, its' players, college football, and all of Penn State (which in some aspects IS a business). Get rid of a very productive JoePa and all that goes with it for the sake of changing things up? Or continue with a man that has helped change the face of more than just football?

So he's going on 82. So he had a bad hip (demonstrating an onsides kick in practice). So what. Does any of this make him less able to produce, teach, educate, and help grow these young men? Likely not.

There are about 100 D1 schools that would absolutely beg for JoePa right now. I bet that there are about 110 D1 schools that wish they had a massive athletic bank account, a great coaching staff of over a combined 60 years (O and D coordinators alone), great recruits, national attention, and the chance to pull off rountine 10+ win seasons every couple years.
Does that still sound like someone who needs to be shown the door?

Yeah, it really sucks to extend the contract of a man that has more D1A wins than anyone; having a 11-1 season and winning his conference; who has donated millions of $$ back to PSU.

You forgot to mention graduating nearly 80% of his players over his career, having more academic all-Americans during his tenure than the majority of schools have in their history, having more bowl victories than most schools do in their history, having six national championship worthy teams (two titles and four undefeated seasons not awarded), soon to be seven after winning the Rose Bowl, and having the national respect and clout to survive the erroneous and slanderous hatchet job the idiots at ESPN did on him and his program this summer. Too bad Joe did not take those arse-hats to court over that nonsense and put them in their place.

December 17, 2008  08:54 AM ET

Why not?

December 17, 2008  09:04 AM ET

I heard its because they expect him to pass on and that way no one has to make a real decision...sorry, but this isnt a story...its stupid...the team went 11-1. F...illidelphia!

December 17, 2008  09:14 AM ET

Why a three year contract? Make him coach for life.

Anyway, he deserves his extension.

The man wants to die on the field after the end of a big win. End of story. I say let him do whatever he wants, he's earned it. Glad to have a few more years of Joe!

PSU is having a great season this year, so I can understand the patience and respect. How long do you think that will hold out? A few years ago, when they were struggling, there were rumblings...

What if he lives to be 95?

The rumblings were mostly a creation of the press. Joe calls the shots and will be the coach as long as he wants to be.

he is an amazing figure for the university... didnt he pretty much buy a library with money he had made at PSU? what else could a university ask from a faculty member.

December 17, 2008  10:39 AM ET

compared to saban...saban would never give back to the university. i used to live next to him in east lansing and saban would always get in fights with the township board because he would say that he did not have to pay property taxes because he was nick saban(huge ****).

He may need more than just a few years to do that...
