Rodriguez, coordinator disagreed

Looking for someone to blame for the Michigan football team's poor defensive showing this year? Former defensive coordinator Scott Shafer, who left the program Tuesday, blames himself. "I take full responsibility for the demise of where Michigan's program is at this time," Shafer said. Coach Rich Rodriguez announced the move, calling it a resignation, and Shafer did not dispute that. "Yes, it is accurate," Shafer said. "We just had a mutual decision. We had different thoughts on the way we did things." Rodriguez said in a statement: "Scott and I agreed that moving in a different direction was in the best interest of the program. I appreciate Scott's hard work on behalf of Michigan football the past year. He is a good football coach, a good person and a true professional. We wish him well in the future." The departure is no surprise given the team's defensive struggles as U-M posted a 3-9 record. Michigan allowed 28.9 points per game, the most since stats were kept beginning with the 1936 season. Never before had a U-M defense allowed as many as 24 points per game. The two had differing philosophies from the start. Shafer believed in a base 4-3 defense, and Michigan began the season with that before morphing into Rodriguez's traditional 3-3-5 late in the season.

Have a brain tumor on me you pusspocket!!!!!! What **** do you know about Michigan football?

December 17, 2008  08:59 AM ET

Ok let me get this straight..

Michigans only problem was 'D' stopping the spread. This is why Lloyd was fired. You bring in RR when the offense was never broken and now you want Ron English back? You people are morons.

I thought it was pretty stupid to let English go. It is not his fault the scheme he inherited was outdated and he was stuck playing the hand he was dealt. He is a top notch coordinator who did not get a fare shake. The defense he inherited had plenty of problems and significant limitations but his manipulation of its strengths and ability to cover the limitations brought them an eleven win season was brilliant. Now they are stuck with Rich Rodriguez who has never been able to field anything more than a mediocre defense and there is nothing to suggest things are going to change given how he is recruiting and moving players around regardless of who is the coordinator. Just look at the roster, barring any position changes, Michigan is entering spring ball with two scholarship defensive tackles. The D-line is going to get steam rolled next year just like the O-line was last year. It will be even worst if and when Graham leaves for the NFL, and while he says he is staying, I wouldn't believe it until we see which underclassmen leave early.

No to Ron English. No. Not at all. I remember some horrible Michigan performances on defense under English and to compare apples to oranges that man did a horrible job with Louisville's defense this past season.

Glad to see this D-Coordinator get the boot but hell no to Ron English.

I would argue that an occasional bad defensive performance would be on the players. Overall, I think English did a good job and brought a toughness that I really appreciated.

Looks like at least 8 of the Michigan recruits are enrolling early, that is a good sign.

Wow good thing they switched to the 3 3 5 defence or they would have had a real bad year. It worked out so well for them. Rich is a genius I tell you a gunius.

there were some bad defensive games for sure but English had a pipeline in southern cal starting up...we were getting recruits that we would not get without him...warren, mouton, campbell, eugene(even though he switched to LSU, he would not have even considered us without English).
All this does not matter because English runs a 4-3 himself and would never want to come back to UM after being fired anyways.

English had a pipeline in Southern Cal? LOL. I wish! He was able to pick a few from Cali but it was no pipeline my friend and many he did bring in were busts. Johnny Sears? Eugene Germany? Those ring a bell?

This is another misstep by RR. I don't believe Shafer was given a fair shot but that's college football coaching for you.

It will be interesting to see who RR brings in but who ever that is, will have a lot of EXTRA pressure on him than he normally would have.

December 17, 2008  10:41 AM ET

warden, i didnt not say he had one, i said he was starting one. He is friends with many head coaches in cali highschool football, namely the dude at long beach poly.
Johnny Sears sucks

seriously, what did happen to Eugene Germany? I forgot about that guy

he was an eff up. And I still disagree that Ron was building a pipeline. Getting D Warren was, imho, a fluke due to Rojo going to USC. There was another player on D Warren's team that had UM interest and he opted to go to Thug U (Miami). I just don't believe that English had anything of substance in Cali. Part of the problem is most kids in that neck of the woods see the weather out in Michigan and say, "No Thanks."

December 17, 2008  11:01 AM ET

I see the possibility of Hopson getting promoted. And someone brought up Pitt's ex DC Rhoads who did a good job of stifling RR's offense when he was at Pitt. Regardless, this isn't a good thing to bring in another guy who has to deal with guys who are use to the 3-3-5. Hence why I believe Hopson will be the next DC.

December 17, 2008  11:03 AM ET

I would like to see them get Chavis. Not sure if he would fit in with RR though. That Rhodes wouldn't be a bad option either. I have a gut feeling they are just going to promote from within though.

I forgot about how English lost Rojo...that was embarrassing.
I hear what you are saying about the weather too...i lived with a LA kid in college and that kid had no business in the snow...it was like cool runnings

I thought it always was the head coach's fault.
