UAB down to six scholarship players

UAB's attempt to make Conference USA a two-big league is about to take a hit because Jeremy Mayfield, Terrence Roderick and Ed Berrios will be ineligible for the second semester. The source said all three are academic casualties. Roderick (21.8 minutes per game) and Berrios (12.5 minutes per game) were key reserves, and Mayfield was supposed to join the team this month. In another development, FoxSports.com is reporting that Armon Bassett -- a former Indiana player who enrolled at UAB and was supposed to join the Blazers for the 2009-10 season -- is leaving school, meaning Mike Davis won't have the talented and troubled guard next season, as originally planned.

Holy moly. They are going to be mrudered for years because of this. How could he allow this to happen?

UAB should just give up sports period. Its not our thing. Let just take pride in being one of the best Medical and Research Universities......leave the sports to the big boys in Tuscaloosa and Troy......besides, Bartow Arena can be demolished and create more parking spaces.

I wonder what Memphis or Southern Miss fan bothered to make up this username. Not very clever, really.

The fact that Davis' own son had academic problems should have been a better indicator.

Or give scholarships to players that don't have to use an X for their signature or take their shoes off to count to eleven. Better yet, require them to find their own name in the phone book before giving them a scholarship.

First not all sports at UAB are bad. The women's cross country and track team have had success on the national level and the Women's soccer and sync. swimming teams have also been good while from what i have seen never having any academic issues (an example, one woman fromthe Sync. team went to the Olympics in 2004 then came back to UAB to get her Masters in Mathematics). The NCAA requirement for a senior such as Barrios is a 2.0...how can he not get a 2.0? The major difference between football and basketball and other athletics is the god-like complex that leads to a lack of commitment towards the real reason you come to college: it's a LEARNING institution, not a recruitment tool for professional sports (someone should really, really tell this to the football team because none of them have to worry about going pro). Before Mike Davis came I taught a course that had several athletes in it. Our group was approached to tutor the men's basketball team and I was more than happy to help out. One of them came to me after grades were released beaming he had made a B in the course. This has not happened since then (Mike Davis came the next season). Student-athletes need to remember which of those two words come first in their title and devote as much time needed to succeed in the classroom. It's not difficult, I was a 3-sport athlete through college before grad school. The competitive nature of athletics in college is supposed to help you transition that success into other parts of your life not ruin your shot at graduating. Some where along UAB big two sports lost this simple lesson and changes will need to be made before this issue can really be solved.

That's not the only problems UAB has. It has numerous problems in the university at large. And to top it off, Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy, who was arrested for assault, is a UAB grad. Good week for Blazers:
