Spurrier lands recruit
Tucker's Jonathan Davis, an AJC Super 11 selection, committed to South Carolina on Wednesday. The 5-foot-7, 205-pound Davis picked the Gamecocks over Georgia Tech, Boston College, Central Florida, Oklahoma State, and Louisville. Davis said South Carolina is recruiting him as an "athlete." He will be given the chance to play tailback, safety or linebacker.

Considering how most schools and recruiting pubs inflate size, 40 time, etc - this guy is listed at 5'7"! Is that true? or did Steve just get a commitment from Papa Smurf?

It's not the size of the dog in the fight but size of the fight in the dog. But a 5'7" linebacker please.

If he's got speed then he could be a good back. Small speedy guys have seem to flourish in college lately. See Oregon State, LSU, UF for references.

but at LB?

You know how scatbacks do well because they can hide behind the offensive line? Perhaps the same is true of a blitzing LB...tiny LB is hidden until he shoots through the gap and hits the QB in the mouth...
But yeah, dude's gonna be a RB...

Apparently all of the schools were really weary of his size in the begining. But after watching him play they couldn't ignore the fact he was always the best one on the field... no matter who his team played. It's hard to turn a blind eye when you know a player's that good... you can always find some place for him on the roster.
There was a LB like this a few years back named Sam Olajubutu... from Georgia too. He was like 5'9" and only two big schools recruited him... Arkansas and Miss State. Everyone was turned off by his height but he ended up leading his team to the state title and was the MVP of the playoffs. He signed with Arkansas and within a year or two he was already starting for them... at MLB. Everyone in the SEC kicked themselves for not giving him a legit look. He ended up earning All SEC honors, was the team's defensive captain, and was eventually signed by the Bucs. He's currently in the CFL I think... so you never know.
But I agree, a 5'7" LB... no matter how good you are will get completely swallowed up by those 6'7" lineman in the SEC. That's too short. He would be better suited at RB or S.

S would be tough also, given that the average WR is now way north of 6'

Was he that short?

He might be fast, but he's still 5'7. A 205 lb linebacker is also kind of small. He might want to look at those tailback options.

I agree with you, Hova. Linebacker??? I don't see it.

Buster Davis is between 5'9" and 5'10", and weighs about 240. Smallish for a LB, but certainly not 5'7", 205.

how tall is Bob Sanders? I know he's not a linebacker but he's short, and can still rock it. Maybe this guy should play safety like Sanders.

Look guys. If you haven't seen this kid play then you need to shut your mouths. I coach for a high school in the same region as Tucker and I promise you this kid can go. Overall, he was the BEST player I saw in all the GA state championship games. I don't think he'll play LB, but he can DEFINITELY, WITHOUT A DOUBT play SS for ANY SEC school. Yeah he's 5'7", but he can run and is always eager to come up and introduce himself. You know that "it" that's always talked about in sports? Well this kid's got that "it", whatever it is. I know lots of schools probably didn't recruit him because of his height, but I promise you South Carolina got a steal.
