Gordon: Drug use hurt Hoosiers

Eric Gordon plays his first NBA game in his home state Friday, but the rookie still sometimes thinks about the turmoil that wrecked his one season at Indiana University. Coach Kelvin Sampson was embroiled in a recruiting scandal that led to his ouster, but Gordon said there was another key reason for the rift in the team. "It was the guys that were doing drugs that were separate," Gordon told The Indianapolis Star in an exclusive telephone interview earlier this week, speaking publicly for the first time about the issues that played a part in a once top-10 team failing to win a single postseason game. The Hoosiers started 17-1 but lost their first game of the Big Ten Tournament and first game of the NCAA Tournament. Gordon didn't say which players used drugs, but he said D.J. White and two others still on the team were among those who did not. Attempts to reach White and several other former players were not successful. Gordon said Sampson "tried to stop it," but the coach "was just so focused on basketball and winning and everything." Gordon said he spent considerable time with a family friend in Bloomington because the atmosphere around some players was so bad he didn't feel comfortable on campus.

See what you get when you hire somone like Sampson. True IU fans were against his hire because of the issues at his last school. The IU AD and others lowered their standards and know look at the mess we are left with. Hopefully they have gotten it right this time.

Shocking, this only happens @ IU and no other program in America would be this stupid.

Sampson had his share of problems but if what Gordon says is true, not sure hwo a coach can stop players from using drugs if their parents can't. You can't blame everything on Sampson, what about the players?

It all starts with the leadership. If he (Sampson) knew this was going on (which in the full interview Gordon stated that he did) then why were they still on the team? He allowed a culture to exist in his program that made choices like this OK. Sure the players were responisble for their own actions, but he was responsible for what he would or would not put up with and still allow a player to be part of the program.

i'm sure Sampson isn't the only coach that allows his players to toke a lil cheebah if winning isn't an issue... Besides, half the NBA smokes weed, so why would you think they weren't already doing it in college???

December 18, 2008  09:08 AM ET

wow, drugs in sports, especially basketball? I don't believe it! These guys treat their bodies like a temple and they'd never ever do drugs especially marijuana. And we all know that NBA players NEVER EVER use marijuana.

If there were any indications of this in their past, Knight would never have recruited them in the first place. He certainly wouldn't have tolerated even the first instance of it, let alone repeated use.

If the NCAA has any REAL integrity, they'll expand the sanctions against Sampson and his staff so that they're out of college coaching permanently.

Granted, that a big If......

What percentage of the NBA would you guess smokes pot? I would say 1/3 of the league...this does not count as drugs.
I wouldnt like to see Rasheed Wallace play if he wasnt stoned

I am sure these players were smoking when they were 17 and 1 so I'm not so sure blaming drugs is the real reason for their fall off.

It kind of sounds as a cop-out and more reason to pile even more on Sampson.

December 18, 2008  12:06 PM ET

He tried to stop it but couldn't? How about throwing the kids off the freaking team or at least putting them in a drug treatment program. IU got off lucky with the NCAA and this dooshbag (Sampson) should never be allowed anywhere near a college program.

December 18, 2008  02:27 PM ET

i went to BC, we smoked (among other things) alot with the BC sports guys, well actually just the Basketball and Football players, the baseball and hockey guys took too many of the chicks so we didnt hangout with them, the bball and football guys were to big for BC girls so we didnt have to worry as much, i have heard other schools are a lot worse, the bc players that did smoke still did well enough academically, for the most part, although teachers were pretty nice to them

Not true a lot of Knight's players toked on some bud. How do i know hell i smoked some with them. So you can cross out that theory.

Nope can't blame this one on Sampson. He's their coach not guardian angel. Can't watch 'em 24/7. These young men are responsible for theier own actions.

December 18, 2008  05:39 PM ET

What the hell else is there to do in Bloomington, Indiana?

December 18, 2008  06:00 PM ET

weed is natural.. its all good. id go as far as saying more than half of all ncaa athletes have tried it a couple times in college.

December 18, 2008  06:11 PM ET

It's just a weed that turns into a flower in your mind.

December 18, 2008  06:13 PM ET

Or, like we say at Wrigley Field: "A Ballpark with grass, is a Ballpark with class"!

December 18, 2008  08:27 PM ET

This doesn't surprise me at all except for the fact that Gordon threw his teammates under the bus. This stuff happens everywhere but very rarely do you hear it acknowledged.

Arsenic is also natural. Being natural doesn't automatically equal good or not harmful.
