Blake's spin-o-rama goal irks Devils
Upon further review, New Jersey Devils forward Bobby Holik called it "so un-hockey" and worse. But Jason Blake's circus shootout goal that gave the Maple Leafs a 3-2 shootout victory Tuesday night at the Air Canada Centre falls both within the spirit and the letter of the NHL rulebook. In fact, it was for plays like Blake's that the NHL added the unlikely term "spin-o-rama" to the book following the first season of the shootout in 2005-06. And after Blake's dramatic goal in which he stopped in front of Devils goaltender Scott Clemmensen before wheeling around to slip the puck past him, NHL director of officiating Stephen Walkom has a great video tool to illustrate the rule. "Obviously players are frustrated when they lose, but if it's a move any player can make on a breakaway then it's considered a good hockey move," Walkom said yesterday. "If it's a play we would allow on a breakaway, why wouldn't we allow it on a shootout. That's the spirit the general managers gave us as a guideline. "The question is on a good hockey goal, on a good breakaway, could this happen? The answer is yes." Though somewhat tepid in their protest after Tuesday's game, the Devils changed their tune considerably yesterday after taking a closer look. Coach Brent Sutter said it was a close call that "looked worse in the video." Holik, however, went much further. "I know it's legal, but it's so un-hockey," Holik told the Newark Star-Ledger. "I think it's B.S. I know the league loves it because it's exciting, but the puck should always be moving forward. "What, next time they'll let him circle the net?" Holik didn't stop there, suggesting the Leafs were taking liberties because of their status as a rebuilding club.

If it is allowed then why complain about it. I guess its because hes jealous that he couldnt do it himself.

What does "taking liberties because of their status as a rebuilding club" mean?

I saw a shootout goal in which Marty St. Louis skated backwards and scored, it was awesome. No one complained like this. Sore losers. Maybe if the Devils could score goals like that people would actually show up for Devils games.

Bobby Holik has always been a minimal-skilled NHLer, who thrived in the pre-lockout, clutch and grab game. He was lucky enough to play on Uncle Lou's Maulers who clutched their way to a few Cups. Now, he is way less effective as checkers actually have to skate and use some creativity when shutting down another player, not hang off of them like an oversized cardigan granny knit for Christmas.

Holik's just mad because he can't score. The only thing Holik is good for is putting the Devils down a man.

Why? Because it took skill?

Holik is an idiot. Plays like that are what the shootout was made for. That's why the more skilled guys take the draw for their teams. Well except for Hartnall.

Shoot-outs are a joke and have no place in hockey. The original (I guess they have changed) rules for a penalty shot/shoot out shot were that the player MUST continue FORWARD progress towards the net. The moment Blake put on the breaks the play should have been over.
The NHL needs to go back to the Win-Lose-tie format. Shoot-outs suck!

It was a great goal! Hopefully it will provide the spark to get Blake more consistant.
The Devils are compulsive whiners and Holik as become so an un-hockey-player.
In case anyone is noticing, the Leafs look to finally be decreasing their goals against recently by allowing only 7 goals against in their last 4 games.

I agree with this to a point, I don't like shootouts either, but it is odd to hear whining from NJ and see that it wasn't Fatso!!!

The whining comes from the top a l a Brett Suter. He was crying in the post game conference. However, Chico Resch was crying as bad as when Billy Smith took his goaltending job away from him.

Count me in with the group that says get rid of the shootout. As was previously pointed ouot, the "original" rules dictated that the player move forward at all times. As soon as the player hits the breaks to spin-o-rama, he quit moving forward. I'm not disputing that it was a great move or very exciting, I'm just saying that it wouldnt have been a goal if Uncle Gary wasnt messing with the rules of hockey. The game is exciting enough without trying to force "excitement" down our throats. The thing is, Bettman is changing hockey to bring in the casual fans who probably wont watch hockey anyway. Rather than try to appeal to the masses (who could care less), take care of your core fan base. If he pisses off the core fans, no one will be left to watch hockey.

Can you imagine Holik trying to spin with that big head? It's in the rules, it's in the net, it's over.

A move made by a hockey player, on a hockey rink, with a hockey stick and hockey puck, during a hockey game. Must have been a hockey move. Everyone is a whiner these days.

Wasn't the ice shower shootout goal also against the Devils, Brodeur? Why does everyone want to do crazy shi against NJ and show them up?

Take it one step further. Have all skaters in the shootout skate backwards and try to score on a goalie defending the net while backwards. I wouldn't complain. Now we're talking skill. Or insanity. But it would be fun.
