Hokies change bowl routine
When the Virginia Tech football coaching staff got back to work after losing last January's Orange Bowl, Coach Frank Beamer called a meeting to discuss what should be done differently in bowl preparations for the upcoming season. The meeting resulted from consecutive bowl losses to Georgia and Kansas, games in which the Hokies were favored to win. Virginia Tech will return to the Orange Bowl on Jan. 1 to face Cincinnati, and the plans discussed last January have been installed. Among the major changes: The team returned to practice just six days after winning the ACC championship on Dec. 6. Last season, the Hokies took two weeks off before their first full practice. Curfew will be midnight during the team's six nights in South Florida. Last season, curfew started off as later than midnight and was scaled down as the game approached. Virginia Tech will change its hotel on the eve of the game to avoid distractions and simulate the regular season pregame routine.

A better routine might involve not turning the ball over 5 times a game like you have done in the previous bowl games. I'm not sure how practice schedules and curfews affect that, but good luck.

I'm sure all of those fans who forked over $1 a ticket will be excited to know that Tech is really getting serious about winning this forgettable bowl game.

You should simply approach every game in the same way--don't do anything differently for bowl games than you do for regular season games. It may be a "reward" (for fans of a team more so than players), but you still have to play the game. Of course, for bowl games the organizers actually expect the teams' players to participate in bowl-related activities--no getting away from that "distraction". (Another reason playoffs are better: you get teams actually focused on playing the game instead of all the "ceremony" of bowls.)

I disagree on that note. Regular games come week after week. So no focus is lost there. But some teams have to week 3-4 weeks until their bowl game. They need a change from the regular practices, rather it be boot camp practices or night practices or whatever. Something has to be tweaked to keep the players' interest and dedication fresh.

I live in Atlanta and one block from the Hokie Hotel while they were here playing Georgia. in the Chick-fil-a Bowl a couple years back. The Virginia Tech Squad closed down the bar (the Twisted Taco) at 3 am, behind their Hotel (the Marriott Marquis) the Thursday, Friday and Saturday night before the big game. Consequently they had no legs in the second half...and nothing but hangover for most of the game. I suggest the Coaches check rooms after curfew if they really want the players heads in the game.

Interesting. What is the legal age to drink in Atlanta? In Blacksburg, VA it's 21.

You're confusing game prep with regular practice--two different things. The point of going to a bowl is to play the game, not party. Party afterwards... if you win.

How about you put the teams in a hotel that's in a boring town with no bars.
That will make them not wander after curfew.
