UNC hires Hansbrough's mom

Not only will North Carolina forward Tyler Hansbrough's mom be in town for his potentially record-breaking performance Thursday night -- she's in town for good. Tami Hansbrough began a new job as the Associate Director of Development at the UNC School of Dentistry on Dec. 8. She is a fundraiser specializing in major gifts and will supervise an annual fund program; the school did not mention her All-American son in the news release announcing her hiring. As per NCAA rules, Tami Hansbrough said she did not receive any help getting the job from the athletics department. "I would never do anything to jeopardize the program; I haven't even talked to Coach [Roy] Williams about where I'm working," she said. Steve Kirschner, associate athletics director in charge of athletics media relations, said the compliance office knew that Mrs. Hansbrough was moving to the area and looking for a job, "which is not the first time that a parent of a student or a student-athlete has moved to be closer to his or her child," Kirschner said. "But we can't help them get jobs, regardless of whether those job opportunities are with the University or not."

Why is this news??????

December 18, 2008  09:12 AM ET

like the fact that her last name is Hansbrough didn't have anything to do with her getting the job... Riiiiiight...

December 18, 2008  09:25 AM ET

Who hasn't hired her.

Some programs can get away with anything as long as they have good public relations. If this very same thing had happened at UNLV back in the day or Indiana last year, or Memphis now, the media would smell, as they should, a rat. The only way a parent of an athlete of a high revenue sport should be allowed to work for a university is if the parent already had the job before the athlete received his or her scholarship.

This happens at most places.

that is such in ignorant comment. both of hansbroughs parents are well-educated, successful people. his mom is more than qualified for the job. who knows maybe she could have gotten the job regardless of the fact that her son is the best college basketball player in the country.

I wonder if she flops as well as her son.

Was Joseph Forte's mother more than qualified for the job she got?

"She is a fundraiser specializing in major gifts"

That was also Michelle Obama's job description at the hospital in Chicago. In other words; she knows rich people.
