Chiefs owner lining up Pioli, Cowher?

The abrupt dismissal of Carl Peterson signaled that Clark Hunt has a plan he's ready to execute. Hunt did not dynamite Peterson strictly for our edification, enjoyment and entertainment. There was a dual purpose. In my estimation, the logical conclusion to reach based on Hunt's action is that he has identified two targets to be Kansas City's next general manager and wanted to alert them that he's coming to woo and be wooed by them. There's going to be fierce competition for general managers this offseason. The Detroit Lions dumped Matt Millen early in the season and have had a head start on the Chiefs. The Cleveland Browns might make a move on Phil Savage and be in the market for a GM. Hunt would be foolish to wait to join the race for a personnel difference-maker. There are two no-brainer options: 1. New England Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli. 2. An experienced front-office executive with strong ties to and the ability to deliver former Steelers coach Bill Cowher. I think Hunt is zeroed in on landing Pioli or someone who can land Cowher.

Yes, the Lions have had a head start, but they sure are playing things close to the vest. There has been very little news leaked about the next choice of William Clay Ford to run the team. I guess it takes longer than I thought to find a new drinking buddy.

I can't see Cowher coming back to take on the messes in KC or Detroit. Cleveland at least has some decent talent to work with but I'm not sure he'd want to take a job with a Steelers divisional opponent. There are probably a couple of decent teams that would dump their current coaches if they knew they could lure Cowher. Perhaps the Redskins, Chargers, Vikings (if they stumble these last two weeks)?

Makes me worried they are happy with the staff they replace Millen with now.

I still think Lions have the most desirable of the available GM jobs.

And why is that if I may ask?

Don't forget that Cowher has close ties to Kansas City and was defensive coordinator here before he took the head coaching job in Pittsburgh. Unlike Detroit and Cleveland, management has done a pretty good job of stripping the team of any problems and have a solid foundation of young players that a guy like Cowher can build on. Also, the Chiefs hired Chan Gailey last year as offensive coordinator. Many of you will remember Chan from his days as Cowher's OC in Pittsburgh. KC is the perfect fit. He can finish his career where it began and maybe he can be the one to give us a ring! Come on back Bill! We love ya here in KC!

Top-notch facilities, top pay and you get to work for an owner that will not hold you accountable. You do not have to show any improvement, or even hit any benchmarks to keep your job, until it is way too late. Not only that, but can you imagine if someone finally comes in a makes the team sucessful? Maybe even win a playoff game?? You would be the next NFL "genius".

Yep. Pioli's last reported salaray with NE was 800,000, Millen's was over 5 mil a year. Pioli will get a bigger contract than Millen, meaning he could be making 7 times as much.

There is no greater job security, and once of the best fan bases in the league. What other team would sell out every game despite a crumbling economy and a horrible record for 7 years straight?

Uh....Cowher was a Cleveland Brown waaaaaaaaaay before he joined the Steelers. I see him returning to his original NFL team before going anywhere else.....other than staying where he is right now.

Does Fannation only have 1 stock photograph of Cowher, this half smiling, half heil hitler one? This has to be the 30th Cowher posting in the past 2 weeks, and only this one pic.

Anyway, do KC's problems really stem from Edwards and their GM? I know it's always a knee-jerk reaction to clean house after a horrible year. But, could it be, they're just not a good team and they need to develop the younger players, and cut everbody else who's not named Tony Gonzales? People see Cowher as some savior, it's gonna take more than that for a KC or a Lion's team to be anything but an afterthought in the NFL.

I'like the Cowher to Browns Idea. The Lions will find some clown that will bring back some old ways to lose , and the Chiefs need to boot Edwards.

December 18, 2008  09:27 AM ET

KC & Cowher. Don't want to say there is no chance for this to happen. Seems unlikely though. Perhaps the ownership is willing to make Bill a limited partner to secure the deal. Cash doesn't seem to be enough to get this done.

December 18, 2008  09:33 AM ET

KC has no chance of landing Pioli

December 18, 2008  09:51 AM ET

Pioli........will get a raise..........won't leave the good thing he has going in NE.

December 18, 2008  10:09 AM ET

rumor has it that Al Davis has been in contact with Cowher ... lol
