Brewers: Cameron-Yankees trade dead

Tired of waiting for the Yankees to make a move, the Brewers killed the proposed deal for Mike Cameron Wednesday, leaving a gaping hole in center field in the Bronx. Could that hole be filled indirectly by Manny Ramirez? Only time will tell. Milwaukee general manager Doug Melvin said Wednesday that he had yanked the Cameron deal off the negotiating table, ending the week-long saga that had led most to believe the veteran center fielder would be sent to the Bronx in exchange for Melky Cabrera and Kei Igawa. "I haven't heard from Brian Cashman and I haven't called them," Melvin told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "I'm very happy having Mike Cameron with our ballclub." Acquiring Cameron would have locked three veterans into the starting outfield spots, but now the Yankees have the flexibility to shift Johnny Damon back to center if they were to sign Ramirez.

I sense a deal brewing.

The Yankees are so damn predictable. Always looking for veteran talent past its prime. It's a wonder the Steinbrenners didn't lose all their money on Wall Street.

now did they yank it, or just pull it?:)

It was about picking up part of the salary. Also the yanks are really looking to dump Igawa. OK I guess the Manny thing is better. Cameron no...damon back to center and manny in left OK. OK. How when thefock is this going to happen. Oh yeah I forgot, after Tex goes to Boston...

DO NOT MOVE JOHNNY NO-ARM BACK TO CENTER!!!

1) The Yanks should sign Manny, platoon him with Damon in left, trade for Ankiel to play center and let Nady play right. That gives the Yanks a serious #4-5 combo of A-Fraud and Manny, both easily able to stroke 40+ bombs each.

2) Deal Matsui for depth and yes, trade Cano for some more youth. Sign Orlando Hudson to play 2nd, he is a much better glove and good leadoff hitter.

3) Sign Ben Sheets.

Rotation - Sabathia, Burnett, Wang, Chamberlain, Sheets.

Hudson
Damon
Jeter
A-Rod
Manny
Ankiel
Nady
Posada
Swisher

Gaping hole? I'm glad that this deal didn't go through...
Melky/Gardner will be fine, if the Yankees sign Manny or Tex (doubt it)

Nice....Yankees: Hire this man! (I'm assuming you mean Hughs or Kennedy for ankiel) again...Nice.... Although I have enjoyed Abreu in that third line up spot, but OK lets go for it...

Yanks will be lucky if they get back to the playoffs even with Sabbathia and Burnett.

As a Yankees fan, I'm glad this deal is dead.

MUCK FANNY! Platoon Damon and Matsui between DH and left while giving them enough days to stay healthy. When healthy last year they both hit.
If Damon could still play center he would have been the last 2 years.
No one will take Matsui's 13 million coming off an injured knee the last 2 years. When healthy he's one of the few clutch hitters they have.
Platoon Manny? I hope you mean somedays at left and some at DH becuase sitting him is not an option.
Cano's going no where. He got his contract and unless he turns it around they won't get much for him and few teams can afford to take that kind of risk.
If Ankiel becomes available I'll carry to NY on my back but I don't think they'll let him go.

They'll throw Swisher out there from time to time as well.

Ditto, we could do without the 180 uproductive strikouts a season

December 18, 2008  09:04 AM ET

as much as i would like to see Melky, Kennedy, and whomever else they want to throw into the mix gone.. I am glad to see that this deal didn't go through.. I like Gardner... as much as i don't want to see damon back in CF signing manny would bring some interesting moments in the 20 games played with Boston

December 18, 2008  09:06 AM ET

Manny in Center? Whaaaaa?

Nevermind. Got it now.

December 18, 2008  09:10 AM ET

We ALMOST got rid of Igawa. Damn. Well as long as we get Manny, we'll be good. Trade Damon for peanuts, keep Matsui in left, Gardner and Melky can battle it out for center. Manny DH. Perfect.

December 18, 2008  09:19 AM ET

This definitely means they are one step closer to getting Manny. If they don't get Tex which looks like the case, they are definitely going to get him. I'm not too happy about that...Ugh...but he will produce I guess.

Until that gentle NY media says something mean about him.... :)

December 18, 2008  09:31 AM ET

Sadly this leads me to believe they are going to sign Manny.

December 18, 2008  09:31 AM ET

Cano goes nowhere, guy is an all star when he is on. Cabrera is tradeable I donlt want to see the Yankees eat other teams bad contracts aymore, so that the Brewers canbuy pitching? Maybe after the Yankees are done in the FA pitching market.
And Camerom would only be a temp till Austin Jackson is ready, it is not a preference for old guys, that is a fabricated outlook. Younger is not always better if they don't have the talent.
