Braves upset with Furcal's agent

The Braves' winter of discontent continued Wednesday, when shortstop Rafael Furcal reached a contract agreement with the Los Angeles Dodgers -- two days after the Braves said they had an agreement with Furcal. One week before Christmas, the Braves have coal in their stockings and something other than holiday cheer for Furcal's agent, Paul Kinzer. "I think you have to be upset with the turn of events," Braves general manager Frank Wren said. "We don't do business this way. You don't expect people you have to deal with to do business this way." Wren said he and Kinzer negotiated all contract details Monday night and the Braves sent a term sheet to the agent's office for Furcal to sign Tuesday morning. Term sheets are the final step, after an agreement is reached. Wren said the term sheet was never returned.

Can't help but feel sorry for the Braves they lose Peavy, then Furcal not a good offseason for them. Don't think he wanted to play 2nd base.

A verbal agreement? Then a double cross? Dirty pool...

Welcome back to 3rd place Bravos.

December 18, 2008  08:28 AM ET

Thanks for giving us enough credit to at least beat the Nats!!

December 18, 2008  08:31 AM ET

Good I'm glad Furcal signed with the Dodgers. He made the right choice and Atlanta is left out in the cold...LOVE IT!!!! Enjoy battling the Nats for last place Braves....Ha! Go Marlins!!!!

Odds are the Braves will look back at this and be thankful it worked out this way. 1- they learned about dealing with Kinzer; 2- Furcal's value is almost entirely in his legs and legs are very likely to go for aging players. He played in 138 games in 2007 and only 36 last year. He's probably more of a risk than Burnett. Find some healthy guys, Wren! :)

Nats and the Fish. No offense to you or other braves fans, but you guys ruled for what, 15 years. It's someone elses turn. Believe me though, I would like you to finish above the stupid mets though...

In this day and age you can't trust anyone or take them for their word. And that goes double for sports agents.

December 18, 2008  09:34 AM ET

if wren likes the players with injury history why hasn't he signed ben sheets

Well, it seems that Scott Boras is no longer the worst agent to deal with. At least with Boras, you know where you stand. Sad that Furcal became a pawn in the agent's games here. I would like to think that he wasn't the one calling the shots, but then again if he so "dearly loved playing for Mr. Bobby Cox," that paltry 3 million buck shouldn't have been enough to pull him away.

I'm old school -- first time Mr. Furcal steps to the plate in the ATL, he should get his free base in one pitch. Lower back should be a nice place to plunk his ***.

That I agree with 100%. And on his way up to that at bat the fans should let him know what they really think of him and give him a standing boo-vation.

I said it in another thread and I'll say it again. The supposed signing made no sense and I'm glad it didn't happen. We have a SS & 2nd basemen those are not our problem areas. Moving Kelly Johnson back to the outfield after 2+ years of learning 2nd base is a dumb idea.

Why so willing to give Furcal a pass?

He in fact is exactly the one calling the shots, the agent is his employee.....

December 18, 2008  10:15 AM ET

LMFAO @ ALL BRAVES FANS!

December 18, 2008  10:46 AM ET

He was just using the Braves to get a better deal from the team that he WANTED to play for. Remember, he did the same thing to the A's two weeks. He made it seem like he was interested, went looking at houses and schools, etc. Why? To set the market for the Braves and Dodgers. It's politics and that's how it goes.

December 18, 2008  11:04 AM ET

What a shocker! Another scummy agent.

December 18, 2008  11:15 AM ET

as scummy as any agent may be, it is the players who hire and allow these scummy thiungs to be done in their names.

Escobar was actually slated to play second, with Furcal staying at SS and Kelly Johnson going back to the outfield. Furcal spurned them the first time to go to L.A. I am a diehard Braves fan, but fool me once shame on you, fool me twice....
