Why Sundin picked Canucks over Rangers

In the end, Mats Sundin made like Woodward and Bernstein. He followed the money. The 37-year-old free agent center followed the money to Vancouver, accepting a pro-rated $10 million deal from the Canucks instead of less than that to live in New York and play for the Rangers. Sundin followed his wallet instead of his heart. Good for him. Just one more mercenary the way pretty much professional athletes essentially are. They get it while they can, like most of us would. Sundin will be playing approximately 55 percent of the season. He will earn $5.5 million from the Canucks. Had he taken the pro-rated $5.5 million from the Rangers that we're told GM Glen Sather advised Sundin's camp the Blueshirts would get to, the former Leaf captain would have earned $3.025 million.

Sour grapes NY Post. Vancouver is a beautiful city, from what I hear. The Canucks have a decent team. It's not like he went to a poor team just for the money.

This is RICH! A New York paper whining about an athelete going for money. Give me a freakin break! The Rangers were one of the worst offenders of trying to buy a Championship prior to the salary cap. The Yankees spend money like it's water and the Mets aren't far behind. Cry me a river NY, cry me a river.

FINALLY the Sundin saga is over. Let's just hope T&R drops him from their daily posts.

December 19, 2008  07:09 AM ET

I'm glad Sundin went to a Western Team. As a long time Leafs fan, I wish him the best of luck.

December 19, 2008  07:35 AM ET

It's finally over. Take the money and run Mats.

December 19, 2008  08:08 AM ET

Oh, a bit bitter are we?

December 19, 2008  09:27 AM ET

Who cares why he did it let's just be happy it's over. Maybe we can get some threads on here thet have to do with the games being played. How is pittsburgh doing this year, are the wings going to repeat, can san jose become a mecca for hockey? Is BETTMAN going to ruin the game and it's fan base anymore? Does he want to put a team in mexico?

A couple of things here;
1) It is a constant source of amazement to me that people can turn anything into an "anti-NY" rant. Yes, they NY teams do throw around way too much money, but let's deal with the story at hand.
2) To refer to the Post or indeed, ANY Murdoch publication as a newspaper is to do a great disservice to The 4th Estate and to the few of us here that are intelligent. (in NY) The Post is aimed at the lowest possible denominator, the people that listen to Rush Limbaugh and think he has a point, facts be damned. I have said several times on these threads, take anything from the post as entertainment, albeit in a "car crash" sort of way.
3) To reiterate: not all NYers are what you think they are. yeah, we are surely in the top 10 for A.Q., worldwide, but just because the owners of the teams here are blithering idiots, it doesn't mean we are.

And here is the perfect coda to this most annoying and boring of NHL dramas:

The Canucks miss the playoffs.

December 19, 2008  09:45 AM ET

sweet. i was worried for a minute.

i do not respect this player at all anymore.

December 19, 2008  09:45 AM ET

and not because he didn't sign with the rangers. this primadonna just wanted the attention and/or is WHIPPED by his wife

December 19, 2008  09:51 AM ET

as irrelevant as heavyweight boxing...when the league contracts back down to 21 teams let me know..because then you won't have teams lining up for has beens like sundin and shanahan..what a joke.

December 19, 2008  09:53 AM ET

Now that Sundin's signed T & R can get to real pressing issues like say.....Forsberg wants to come back. It's a vicious cycle.

WHO GIVES A RAT'S BUTT!

December 19, 2008  10:00 AM ET

NEWS FLASH.......Sundin scratches his arse......daily updates for the remainder of the season......

December 19, 2008  10:07 AM ET

The thing I dont understand is if it wasn't all about the money, then why would you drag it out like this? So best fit does mean most money.

I think Sundin is an attention wh0re. Well anyway coming from a Ranger fan good luck Mats.

December 19, 2008  10:18 AM ET

Rangers would have given him a shot at a cup. But, we all know that winning a cup is not on Mats's agenda. Not sure why NY is upset, did anyone think he would go somewhere where he was expected to win?

December 19, 2008  10:27 AM ET

It makes sense. Vancouver had the cap space and roster spot.

December 19, 2008  10:27 AM ET

I really wish FanNation would stop reporting this GARBAGE and actually discuss the games that are played so we can have actual discussions. This article is right up there with the National Enquirer, Sun, and other rags.
