Braves call Furcal's agents 'despicable'

If Rafael Furcal's decision to renege on a verbal agreement to sign with the Braves was the biggest jolt of the team's dreadful winter, this must be the aftershock. John Schuerholz, the Braves' president and former general manager, Thursday called the dealings of Furcal's agents "despicable" and "disgusting" and said the franchise would no longer entertain signing players represented by them -- ever. Tellem, the lead agent in the Wasserman Media Group, released a seven-point e-mail statement Thursday night, saying in part: "Losing out on an all-star player like Furcal is always disappointing, and we understand the Braves' frustration with the outcome of this negotiation, but it does not change in any way the fact that we conducted ourselves with integrity and complied with all rules of Major League Baseball throughout this process." The Braves believed they had reached an agreement with Furcal on a three-year, $30 million contract with a fourth year vesting option. At Kinzer's request, they faxed the agent a term sheet Tuesday morning for Furcal's signature. A term sheet is considered the final step of negotiations. But Kinzer took the offer back to Los Angeles and used it as leverage.

Too bad. But they did win the ONE title in that 11 or so seasons. 1 in 11 - that is still pretty good. Braves = Aaron = Selig.....sounds like a bunch of brown nosers to me. You want the player.....spend the money. That is the American way. Get over it and stop the whining.

Kinzer hasn't positioned himself very well in what will be a buyers market over the next few years. The sellers market for baseball players died this year.

The Braves are nothing but a bunch of arrogant pricks anyway. I'm glad Furcal reneged on them....maybe it humbled them a little. And it was one title in 14 seasons and I would hardly consider that to be successful.....unless you consider choking 13 times to be a means to measure success. It doesn't seem to work out well for the Mets.

While most agents are despicable, guy is doing his job right? Which is getting most he can for his client.

December 19, 2008  08:46 AM ET

What exactly does Braves management think they are going to get out of all this foot stomping?

Let's say that it all played out just as they claim. So the guy reneged an oral agreement with them. Happens every day, all the time, everywhere, in business and though everyone knows an oral agreement *may* be actionable in court the standard is really *signed* contracts.

For all the fist pounding, what do they think should happen? Do they want the comissioner to invalidate the contract with the Dodgers and force Furcal to report to the Braves next spring?

They frankly admit that the player never signed the term sheet so really, was there in fact a deal?

I think it's just a way for the Braves to position themselves to have an excuse for coming in fouth place again in 2009.

Schuerholz has been is baseball for a long time and I can never remember anyone saying anything bad about his integrity. For him to make such a strong statement about this group leads me to believe that they truly did do something "despicable" and "disgusting." Yes, there was no official signed contract, but there are unwritten rules about how people should treat each other in these situations. If you cannot trust an agent to shoot straight with you, how are you supposed to work with them?

Agents are the practically the scum of the earth. Scott Boras is case and point. Schuerholz has been one of baseball's best executives for years now and I have never heard of an instance of him feeling this strongly publicly about the incident. Why have the team send over the paperwork when you already know the offer and you KNOW that your client is taking other offers? It is horse crap and bad business. I am not one to say that I agree with all of the Braves moves, but when has a person's word not become their bond? Remember, "The one bridge you burn, may be the one you have to cross later in life" It isn't illegal, but then again neither is bad mouthing our country. Does it make it morally right?

December 19, 2008  09:31 AM ET

The Braves don't need that drunk!! PERIOD!!! Escobar is doing fine.

December 19, 2008  10:09 AM ET

I would really like to know if you people that are defending Schuerholz have ever negotiated to buy a house or a car before....this kind of thing happens all the time....seriously. Get off your uppity high horse Schuerholz, and quit whining like a little baby.

December 19, 2008  10:39 AM ET

Name calling...where is that going to get them...

you fall for every article in here dont you? its RUMORS ok?? relax......media hypes everything. maybe you should start whining on here and start cheering for your team. or are they leaving florida?? thats not a rumor......thats the truth

I have negotiated to buy a car and a house before, and I expected that the car dealership and the real estate agent were doing what they were leading me do believe they were doing. If they had not treated me fairly, I would never go back and use them again and I would be sure to tell all my friends not to use them as well. Is Shuerholz doing anything any different? I understand that things are not official until the dotted line is signed, but it is a sad reflection of the morailty and integrity of a person when they do not believe their word means anything.

Maybe the Braves should follow the buisness model of the Florida Marlins. You know, buy winner, sell the team off the off-season, suck for 5-7 years before buying another winner...That's sure to bring the fans in a lot more than being a model for consistency and class.

So being a model of consistency and class is choking in the playoffs 13 times...consistencey I'll give ya....class....not so much....I seem to remember a pitcher by the name of John Rocker.....hmmm epitome of class as I recall............oh yeah...I went there.

If the Braves negotiation team had been smarter, they could have avoided this. They made a dumb mistake and are trying to make it look like it's the agent's fault. What did they expect when they gave them the contract? The only way the contract could really be used as leverage like that is if there is enough time allotted for the signature that the agent can play around with it. Protect yourselves. Put a shorter time limit on the offer dummies. I guarantee the leverage goes downhill if there is a time limit measured in hours. The Braves should have known it would happen and prepared for it. They didn't. They got burned. Welcome to the real world fellas.

True, but if they requested the term sheet and then used it for leverage then there is a problem. Teams don't usually grant a term sheet unless they feel the deal is done. Hopefully more teams will stop doing business with agents that they feel act unethically, like Boras and Rosenhaus!

I'll bet $100 you were a Braves fan prior to 1990.

No, the model of class is being a Braves fan your whole life and then acting like you've always hated them the moment the state of Florida gets a team. Florida buys their way into the playoffs twice, and suddenly you're acting like they are the Yankees or something. Remember where your boys finished every other year except for 1997 and 2003.

And what is the point of bringing up John Rocker? I believe the Braves let him go shortly after all of that went down.
