Recruits picks Tech over Georgia

n the day that Centennial defensive end Euclid Cummings was scheduled to be at Georgia, he ended up committing to Georgia Tech. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Cummings picked the Yellow Jackets over North Carolina. Both UGA and Florida had shown moderate interest in Cummings, but neither school has extended scholarship offers. It was an easy decision for Cummings, who was still on an emotional high after making a recruiting trip to Tech last weekend. On Thursday, he decided he couldn't wait any longer to commit to Tech. He canceled his trip to Athens, and got Jackets coach Paul Johnson on the phone to break the news.

How can it be considered picking Tech over Georgia when he didn't even have an offer from UGA? Non-story, good luck big boy. If you were all that, you would have already had offers from these schools, not "moderate interest" from the likes of UGA and FLA.

And the trend begins.....Mark Richt is extremely OVERRATED......that was clearly evident this year.

I agree. I love these stories. Unknown player selects Arkansas State over USC, Penn State, Florida, Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma and the Baltimore Ravens.

Yeah, that article didn't play out like the title of it implied.

I'm not up on Mark Richt, so don't take this as an insult... How many SEC championships does he have?

Richt could be the next SEC coach on the hot seat.....

Two SEC championships (2002 and 2005). UGA also lost the SEC championship in 2003 to LSU. Richt started coaching at UGA for the 2001 season.

If the dawgs keep disappointing in the next two seasons, then he will be on the hot seat. I don't think UGA will have preseason national title hopes each year though, so the preseason hopes might not be as high as 2008.

Also don't forget UGA was his first head coach job. If that is over rated, then so be it..

That's not shabby at all. Better than Tuberville did. 2 of 3 in the SEC champ game, I guess, in 8 years.

I wouldn't get rid of him, but he seriously underachieved this year, even with all of their injuries. I think he relied waaayy too much on the passing game. Moreno was the guy, not Stafford, regardless of how good the receivers are.

why dont you guys just be happy for the kid? he's going to play ball at a BCS school for free, something i doubt most, if any, of you would know anything about.

This has nothing to do with the SEC. He picked Tech over UNC. This is an ACC recruiting battle and they mentioned UGA because no one else would care if it was all ACC.

Well except me because I am a UNC fan.

Richt is not on the hot seat. His team just won 10+ games for the sixth time in the last seven years, won its sixth bowl game in the past 8 years (losing narrowly the other two), and the team returns 16 starters next season (more if one takes into account the injured players who never played a down this year). This team sustained an unbelievable number of season-ending injuries (22, including 19 to scholarship players) and still won 10 games. Most teams would have had their whole season scuttled by that many injuries. And while Florida will be the team to beat in the SEC next season, Spurrier's washed up at South Carolina, Tennessee's rebuilding, Kentucky's solid but no world-beater, Auburn's got a rebuilding project under way, and Vandy's....Vandy. The Dawgs don't play Alabama next season and get LSU at home. I think Richt's team will be a preseason top 15 team (no unrealistic expectations to deal with next year) and will be a mild surprise, winning 10 or so games again and beating Georgia Tech in the process. That's hardly hot-seat-type stuff.

HELL YES! Good choice.

January 26, 2009  04:54 PM ET

Wait, what? As much as I love bashing UGAy, it's not really choosing Tech over UGAy if he didn't have an offer from them.
