Marbury pays steep price for publicity stunt

Stephon Marbury's publicity stunt at Staples Center Tuesday night didn't come cheaply. Marbury paid $2,600 for his courtside, front-row, baseline seat - which was face value, The Post has learned. Marbury, on his cell phone most of the night, watched the Knicks blow a 15-point halftime lead to the Lakers. According to a Lakers' official, a Marbury rep called the front office looking for two courtside seats for the game, but the club only had one left - the last seat along the baseline, in the corner. Marbury is making $21.9 million this season, but hasn't played a minute. While celebrities Penny Marshall and Spike Lee, and Lakers' Lamar Odom and Trevor Ariza made their way over to say hello, none of the Knicks players acknowledged the banned point guard.

The cost of that seat was "chicken-feed" to Stephon, considering he's getting paid to do NOTHING.

i dont follow basketball much but this situation seems to be getting out of hand, right?

Nice to know that in these troubled economic times an athelete doesn't flaunt his wealth.

I'm beginning to think that Marbury has a perverse sense of humor. This situation is truly bizarre, but he seems to be in lockstep with the madness.

I think all that money and attention since he was a little kid has warped his sense of reality, but it does make for good theater.

At least it gives us a laugh in these tough financial times.

A "Marbury rep" called the Laker front office....

How would you like to have your career prospects hitched to Marbury's wagon in this economy?

December 19, 2008  08:16 AM ET

Both Marbury and the Knicks need to grow up. Neither one will get a ring any time soon!!!

December 19, 2008  08:30 AM ET

The story is dead. Stop bringing it back.

December 19, 2008  08:50 AM ET

$2,600 is a steep price? For an NBA player making $21mm to stay away from the team? C'mon, I thought this article was going to include some fines or other penalties. I might feel a pinch if I paid $2,600 but I'm guessing Marbury spent that much on those stylish pocket squares last year.

As Guam said, kill this story already.

What do you want people with money to walk around looking like bums so they don't piss off people who are struggling?? Get real and stop hating... let that man do what he wants to with his money... he earned it... if you ever get any money i'm sure you're not gonna want anyone telling you what to do with it.

December 19, 2008  08:56 AM ET

Marbury+Knicks=Idiots. Neither are worried about a championship. Just themselves and thier egos. What a pathetic bunch.

December 19, 2008  09:01 AM ET

I admit- I think Marbury's 'stunt' was pretty damn funny.....

December 19, 2008  09:03 AM ET

$2600 to a guy making $21 million doing nothing. Sounds like pocket change to me.

December 19, 2008  09:06 AM ET

Never has a pro player received so much and provided so little. This is non-performance of a written agreement and certainly a lack of consideration from Marbury to the Knicks. The Knicks should sue the psycho in court to recover all five or six years of payment to Marbury and set a precedent if need be. Something, anything to stop this kind of abuse from happening in the future.

He's such a **** bag.

Do you losers consider any ribbing of a player as "hating?" You want everyone to kiss every players arse or what? This guy is a loser and if you still want to stroke him then you go right ahead but just like the article said, not even one of his team mates even acknowledged his existence so whos hating?

December 19, 2008  09:14 AM ET

what exactly- other than not being on the same page as everyone else- has Marbury actually done ? I am NOT a marbury fan he is a moron- but fair is fair- they've BANNED him from MSG- is he under house arrest ? what exactly SHOULD he be doing ?

December 19, 2008  09:17 AM ET

As Stephon said "I'm earning my contract by doing nothing."

This reminds me of pro wrestling when a guy has been "banned" from ringside, but "buys" a ticket so can be in the front row. I was waiting for Marbury to blast D'Antoni with a chair!

December 19, 2008  09:20 AM ET

$2,600 for someone making 21.9million is equal to $11.87 for someone making 100,000 - so Marbury buying the "face value" courtside seat is the same as someone buying a pack of smokes and a Pepsi at a Rite Aid in New York.
