Vermeil won't deny interest in Chiefs job

Former Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil told me today that he has not been, nor expects to be, contacted about returning to Kansas City in any front-office capacity. Vermeil, who spent five seasons as Chiefs coach earlier this decade, said that talk centering on Vermeil being hired in a Bill Parcells-like football operations director position was nothing but a "big rumor." Still, he wouldn't shoot down the idea that he might be interested in such a position. "I don't talk about that," he said Thursday. Was he saying he wouldn't be interested in such a thing? "I didn't say that," he said. "I said no one talked to me about that."

Dick is not the answer. We need whole new face and attitude to come into town and give this team a new identity.

All I see is tired retreads in the NFL ranks for coaching jobs,I wan to see some new infusion in league, not these I'm tired of working in my garden can I have a coaching job please.

As a Rams fan, I'd happily take a "retread" like Vermeil back.

Is John Robinson available? Or Chuck knox?

December 19, 2008  11:13 AM ET

Don't do it Chiefs...he's done coaching.......Vermeil that is....

Be careful what you wish for. Don't forget that Carl Peterson always lined up the team to fit the desires of the head coach. The Chiefs did not draft an offensive lineman in the first four rounds between 1999 - 2007. Vermiel was in favor of signing older, veteran players as opposed to developing talent (Trent Green, Patrick Surtain & others) . He allowed our team to get old!

He was a one-dimensional coach who expected his stout offense to outlast opponents as they scored at will against his weak defenses. I like Vermiel, but he is not the guy for this job. We have an opportunity to develop young talent and become balanced on both sides of the ball. We need a guy who is an evaluator and developer of talent, not someone who depends on relationships with veterans. We need to boot these Vermiel rumors out of here! He's a good guy, but not the right fit for KC now!

As a Chargers fan, I hope the stupidity in KC continues. By all means hire an old, crybaby, out of touch with football for the past 5 or 6 years. It will insure that the Chefs continue to wollow. Personally, I think the Chefs aren't that bad (as evidenced by how tough they played the Chargers this season, losing two games by a total of 2 points!). But, if KC wants to bring Vermeil back from the dead, be my guest.
