Burke upset with Canucks

Former Canucks GM Brian Burke, now the president and GM of the Maple Leafs, told Vancouver media that he was not happy about being left out of Trevor Linden's retirement ceremony on Wednesday night. "I was clearly excluded and I'm extremely disappointed," Burke told the Vancouver Province. "I would have flown from anywhere on the planet to be there." Burke was the Canucks GM when the team drafted Linden in 1988. In 2001, when he was the Canucks GM, Burke made a trade to bring Linden back to Vancouver. He signed Linden to a new contract in 2003 to keep him in the fold. The Province noted that Burke was not completely blanked -- he was part of the video tribute. Burke was briefly shown handing the Clarence Campbell Trophy to Linden in 1994 when Burke was serving as NHL vice-president. The Vancouver Sun noted, though, that Linden did not forget Burke - he thanked him during his speech.

It's not about YOU Burke. ****!

December 19, 2008  07:12 AM ET

Was'nt Pat Quinn GM of Vancouver when they drafted Linden?

December 19, 2008  07:36 AM ET

For Christ's sake Burke let Linden have his day. What a freakin ****.

December 19, 2008  08:09 AM ET

LGP and darkstorm got it spot on.

What a moron. Maybe if he took his head out of Bettman's lap once in a while, he'd m,ake an once of sense. (you're all welcome for that visual by the way)

Pat Quinn drafted Linden, not Burkie. Thanks again Toronto for proving you know nothing about hockey unless it's Leaf related. Also, Burke, ****!

December 19, 2008  12:34 PM ET

He's making me all misty eyed...

December 19, 2008  12:42 PM ET

Doesn't he have his own team to worry about?

December 19, 2008  12:44 PM ET

I don't get the hooplah over Burke...he had one team that won one Cup. This makes him some kind of genius?

December 19, 2008  12:46 PM ET

...and he was the assistant GM; not the GM...Quinn was.

December 19, 2008  12:49 PM ET

WAAAHHH! WAAAHHH! WAAAHHH! I'm soooo hurt! I'm gonna make myself the center of attention anyway! Even if it's in T&R! And, if I cry loud enough, maybe even in HNIC!!!

December 19, 2008  01:09 PM ET

What a fu#$%^& baby. If you wanted to be there that badly, why not go on your own?

December 19, 2008  01:11 PM ET

We've all known for months when the Linden tribute date was. If he was that concerned and that much of a friend to Linden he would have worked this outs well before hand. He handled it just as poorly as the Canucks management.

True! I didn't know you needed an freeking invitation to go to a hockey game! Just buy a ticket and go .... if it means that much to you! But, obviously, this isn't about Trevor being honored!

Toronto is his team now. Deal with the 'here and now!'
Trever Lindon was a very good player (not hall worthy) but a good player.
Burke needs to get started with Toronto because, that is where he is now.
Spend the money that you had allocated for Sundin!!!!!!!!!!!

He made one comment to a reporter that he was disappointed about not being invited to the ceremony. Burke clearly liked Linden, and hence brought him back to Vancouver. I don't get some of the groupthink that goes on around here.

Nor does it mean that Burke was trying to make the night "all about him". He expressed mild disappointment at not being personally invited to the ceremony, despite being integral in bringing Linden back, and allowing him to complete his career and his legacy in a Vancouver uniform. Yeesh.

And to those saying he should have gone anyway - what are you talking about? First of all, buying a ticket and showing up to the game is not the same as being invited, nor does it carry the same meaningful weight. He felt snubbed after clearly having a good relationship with Linden. End of story.

I lurk T&R a lot, and I generally like the entertaining banter between Spiny, LGP, etc. But my god, over the past year or so the regulars here have banded into some sort of pseudo-"old boys club". When someone gives an opinion, everyone else just reinforces it.

They'd be much wiser to not spend the money and start dumping more players.
They need to win the Tavares Sweepstakes before Ottawa sneaks in there and gets him.

Chris Pronger, take note. He's one of Burkie's boys and will probably be in Toronto before you know it.
