Manny talks at minimum

The possibility that Manny Ramirez becomes a Yankee isn't out of the question. But in order for it to happen, a whole lot of talking has to go on between the club and agent Scott Boras. "It's not impossible, but there haven't been a lot of discussions," a source said. "Right now they aren't talking." Though the Yankees will introduce hurlers CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett today at an old Yankee Stadium press conference, the Yankees' focus remains on strengthening a rotation that has an opening in the fifth spot behind Sabathia, Burnett, Chien-Ming Wang and Joba Chamberlain. Andy Pettitte, Derek Lowe and Ben Sheets remain possibilities. After that the Yankees could turn their attention to adding a middle-of-the-order bat to protect Alex Rodriguez. And that could be Ramirez, whose agent Scott Boras is also the point man on the Mark Teixeira Derby that has developed into a two-team race featuring the Angels and Red Sox.

The Yankees have lost a large part of their offense. Let's see if they replace it through trades or signing Manny. They've not improved the team with the new pitching if they don't replace the offense. I'm sure they've learned that a one dimensional team doesn't cut it in the AL East.

It is going to be a buyers market soon, Manny going to be upset because he is not going to get the money he wants....tsk tsk

Who would want an upset Manny on the team?

December 19, 2008  08:59 AM ET

Wonder if he was serious about retiring if he doesn't get the deal he wants? Me thinks not.

December 19, 2008  09:11 AM ET

If he does not get what he wants, then he will do what seems like the seetest revenge, and nothing would be sweeter to him than to sign with the Yankees and put it to the Red Sox.....Just saying, could be his thinking at some point..

December 19, 2008  09:12 AM ET

that would be sweetest....lol

I find it funny how Manny is the topic of so many barbs and downright insults... for a man who produces on a hall of fame level and never has any off the field trouble.

I hear about him not running out grounders... although Ortiz, Pujols and Giambi don't exactly bust it to first base on infield hits either.

Whoever signs him will have .310/40/120 in their lineup

The numbers are there but Manny also was known to demand a trade almost annually when he was in Boston, dog it on the basepaths, load around in left field and take days off with mystery illnesses and ailments.

Someone sign him for a boatload of money, massive years with a team opt out every year. Bite me Manny.

December 19, 2008  11:04 AM ET

Abreu and Giambi are gone, who knows it Matsui can still stand... we need another big bat to protect AROD

December 19, 2008  11:13 AM ET

Manny for 2 years- at BIG $$ would be a good deal for the Yanks. He will produce. I do agree partially with Eugene- he is not a 'dirtbag' type of guy- just not all there mentally.
If he does start to flake out- the Yankees with their massive payroll and ability to absorb 'dead weight' could survive manny being manny....not many other teams could

December 19, 2008  11:22 AM ET

Say what? Maybe not with GM's, but there's plenty of talk between gossipy yenta sports writers with their garbage articles daily about the angels, dodgers, yankees, lakers, galaxy and FC barcelona interested in signing Manny Ramirez. I kinda wish free agency talks and off season work was NOT open to the public and media.

Good point, right now I sign Manny under my terms, not his. No big bucks and no long term deal and plenty of incentives to cover my butt in case he develops more of an attitude.

A great TD. More people should see it and learn what a throwdown is all about:

Git-er Done ... Manny would be a perfect fit as a full time DH to hit behind Mr. Rodriguez. 3 years around 60 million with a incentives raising to around 70 million and a 4th year club option. The Cash-man will deliver

December 19, 2008  02:15 PM ET

The Yankees have an appearance cause, Manny is on record as saying he will never cut his hair. So forget about manny coming to the Yankees

NO WAY he will accept a deap with an 'option'
that is why he left Boston.
and 3 years 60 mil >?
he was making MORE in Boston- he ain't settling for
less than 25 mil per.....

December 19, 2008  03:48 PM ET

The plot thickens... Angels just signed OF Juan Rivera. Vlad, Mathews Jr, Hunter, Rivera as the OF/DH core. No room for Manny? Looks like it will be down to just the Yankees and Dodgers. Manny better pray Teixeria does not go to the Yankees or Manny will be stuck with a 2 year $40 mill offer from the Dodgers (what he had with Boston).

Hal and Hank have taken out that clause. Hank has been quoated as saying he doesnt give a EFF about Manny's hair... only his bat.
