UT's Shipley requests sixth season

Texas officials have filed an appeal with the NCAA requesting a sixth season of eligibility for wide receiver Jordan Shipley, who missed the 2004 and '05 seasons because of injuries, coach Mack Brown said Thursday. The NCAA can grant an additional season of eligibility in such injury-related cases but a player must complete the final regular-season game of his senior season before applying for the extra year. Brown said he is optimistic Shipley will receive the extra year, based on past precedents and the player's medical history. A ruling is expected in January. "I think I deserve another year. I missed over two whole seasons," said Shipley, who was sidelined by knee and hamstring injuries during the early stages of his college career.

What, you could not finish your degree in the first four years? I just love it when players say the deserve things.

December 19, 2008  09:25 AM ET

Heck, why not ask for 2 or 3 while you're at it? All they can say is no.

I'm not sure it has anything to do with his degree? He could be in grad school and still playing, can't he?

I've seen a lot worse than that on people getting medical redshirts.

Grad students do play, it's 4 years of eligibility irrespective of degree earned. This would be big for UT. Cosby will be gone, it will be Shipley and Malcolm Williams with Brandon Collins in the slot. TE Bo Scaife played how many years at UT?

He'll be in grad school next year.

I thought he was starting Med School.

I am so happy right now. Shipley is the Wes Welker-esque security blanket. And that's the way redshirting goes fellas, you get four years of full playing eligibility. Finish in 4 years? Most everyone redshirts freshman year and ends up playing a full 4, making them 5 year college students. That's just the way it is. He got injured, and he deserves to get that year back.

He'll be in grad school next year?!?!?! He started at Texas one year after me and I've been out of school 4 years. He doesn't want to leave Austin and get a real job. He won't play sundays.

He's requesting another year because he sat out 2 YEARS with injuries. You really make yourself look stupid with comments like that. So YES, he does "deserve" another year. Oh, and he's graduating on time, he'll be in grad school, something I'm sure you know nothing about.

Agreed - the NCAA says you can play for four years. You can sit out one for development (redshirt) and, if signficantly injured, sit out a second year. I could care less about Shipley but this isn't unusual. Makes you wonder why this is even an article...

As much as I hate Texas, he seems to be a pretty sharp kid. He just wants to boost his draft stock.

Actually the NCAA has stated in its rules that any academic athlete has 10 semesters to compete in any NCAA sanctioned sport.

sounds like a hater to me.

maybe it took him longer to finish his degree because HE PLAYS A COLLEGE SPPORT.

do you know how much of a time commitment that is?
and not everything is about money to everyone, maybe he'll play NFL, maybe he won't.

maybe he just loves the game of football because you have to love a sport to be able to handle the amount of time it takes up without going crazy.

what's the rush to get out of college and "get a real job" when your going to school for free to do what you love while positioning yourself to make more money when that time does come?

December 19, 2008  04:26 PM ET

I think the main reason is that Colt is coming back... if Jordan is able to stay... Texas is gonna be even better Offensively next year than this year... They will also have TE Blaine Irby back from injury as well

December 19, 2008  05:28 PM ET

I went to high school with a moron like Shipley. He went to Junior College for like 8 years and took almost every course available. He said that he could get an AA in virtually every subject, but I bought him a Charmin 30 pack instead, and told him it's much softer.

I wonder whatever happened to that guy.

It's an article because he could have filed for the draft. It's an article because he'll be a top 10-15 WR in 2009. It's an article because he'll be the veteran WR on a team with a Heisman frontrunner. Its an article because there are 650,000 Texas alumni with discretionary income...and many of those read SI...and advertisers want to reach them. Next class will be economics.

December 19, 2008  07:13 PM ET

I guess my question is why he would want to do it? Although he might higher in the draft if he stayed another year AND had a good, injury free year, why would he want to take the risk. Given his past injuries, all it would take is one more serious injury that could lose him an NFL career altogether. Why not go ahead and go for the draft now and then do grad school or whatever in the off season like others? Steve Young did his law degree while an active player in the NFL.

December 19, 2008  07:20 PM ET

Maybe because he is disappointed with the way this season is ending, and thinks the team has potential to be even better next season (and maybe even play for a national title).
