Yankees, Angels back in Teixeira talks

A day after Red Sox owner John Henry strongly suggested that he'd hit his limit with his latest bid for free-agent star first baseman Mark Teixeira, Teixiera's agent Scott Boras was back in dialogue with the Yankees and Angels, people familiar with the talks told SI.com. Boras was believed to be looking for offers of at least $180-million, or perhaps more, from at least a couple of the other interested teams after talks with Boston stalled. It's believed the Red Sox were bidding close to $180 million before Henry publicly suggested that he was done bidding. Yankees people were thought on Friday to be debating the merits of Teixeira vs. Manny Ramirez, Boras' other available slugging superstar, and there may be a split vote in the pinstripe hierarchy. While they all love Teixiera's all-around play and character, Ramirez may be favored by some for his unmatched clutch hitting prowess, unique ability to tweak the rival Red Sox and to draw attention and dollars, but especially because he'd require a shorter term (perhaps three or four years as opposed to at least eight for Teixeira). Meanwhile, there are signs that the Angels, who were thought to be trailing Boston a few days ago with a bid in the area of $165 million, might be readying for a move now. Some Angels baseball people figured that $160-to-170 million might be owner Arte Moreno???s limit, but that doesn???t look at all clear now.

The Yankees are gonna get him and then all the whiners will be beeeotching about - what else..... money. Because people get so jealous in life....it is not even funny. The boy works for the man and is his property. When they have you....you are their's and then they expect you to put with everything they throw out you. That is life. Deal with it.

December 20, 2008  07:27 AM ET

C'mon now, Manny's ability to tweak the RedSox, let's stop making things up. And I hope Scrooge Boras gets a paper cut counting all of his money!

December 20, 2008  07:53 AM ET

If the Yankees really wanted him they would have been major players already and they haven't been and they've admitted that. At this point if they get it him will cost them 200 million, they can afford it but is it worth it. and every dollor they spend they spend another in luxery tax so these contracts become a lot more when its all said and done.

No No, Manny is reserved for the Yankees, so he and his ego can join their other clubhouse egos and really mess things up. Life won't be fair until Manny is in Pin Stripes and sowing hate and discontent in the Bronx.

December 20, 2008  08:14 AM ET

Lets be serious.....
in the short run- Manny is a BETTER offensive player tan Tex.
No doubt.
The Yanks are a team that NEEDS to win NOW - or else
their 'mystique' will continue to fade
- the also can get him for 2-3 years-

Tex is a good player- but he isn't as pressing a need for the
Yanks as front line starting pitching was
and currently as a QUALITY OF is- preferably CF

Manny is the Target- short term big $$
locking up Tex, after the big signings will hamper future signings
such as when Jeter comes up, wang, Joba & whomever else
we eventually get in FA.

December 20, 2008  08:48 AM ET

When Jeter comes up, it maybe time to let him go and move ARod to short. Jeter's age is starting to show, and he was never that good a defensive SS.
Heresy perhaps, but the Yankees have hung on to aging talent too long and look where it has gotten them.

December 20, 2008  09:27 AM ET

"Yankees people were thought on Friday to be debating the merits of Teixeira vs. Manny Ramirez" What?!?!? Is one a better cook than the other? Perhaps they're debating each players writing style?
Let's see... sign Teixiera and fix first base for the next eght years. Or sign Manny, screw up the outfield completely, have a pariah on the team and look like idiots. Tough choice, huh?

December 20, 2008  09:53 AM ET

Boras is using the Yankees. He knows his only choices for the guy now are the Red Sox and the Angels, and the Red Sox have made their final offer...So, make your offer, and tell him that is it....

Boras is using everybody! The man is Satan. He must be stopped!

Arod has gotten too big to play short- he'll NEVER
play there again...
as far as getting rid of Jeter ? Tat's easy to say than do
- obviously you aren't a Yankee fan-

Jeter will be re-signed - that is a GUARANTEE-
only question is for how long
- Jeter's defensive 'liabilities' are WAY overblown.
he obviously doesn't have the range anymore- but he
doesn't make a ton of errors, has a strong arm and
is a baseball player.

Manny is the man. Muck Tex and Muck all you Hanny Maters.

No, the "man" is/was Jack Albertson. Canny is a mancer and a feam tucker!

He's a feam tucker all right, every time he's at the plate, the other feam is tucked! Who the hell is Ack Jalbertson, anyway?

He's the old dude that was with Freddie Prinze in "Chico and the Man." How I remember that, I don't know.

Manny is definitely a wild card in the hot stove league. I think the Yankees really, truly want the guy. Tex is a better fit with the Angels.

You know guys like Adam Dunn, Bobby Abreu, Garrett Anderson and Pat Burrell are getting impatient for Manny and Tex to sign. They probably feel like the chubby girl at homecoming, sitting in the corner waiting for a dance partner.

December 20, 2008  04:16 PM ET

Go Angels. What up Atro??

December 20, 2008  04:27 PM ET

anybody here?

You are probably right, they will resign him, but it's not the smart move if they give him big money or a long contract. That's one of the recent differences between the Bombers and the Sox--in Boston they let them go if they ask for too much money or too many years when they get older. Who do you think made out on the Johnny Damon deal four years ago?
ARod is probably too big for SS, though if he got off the steroids he might shrink back down to playing size--but then Madonna would be SO disappointed.
And you are right, I am not a Yankee fan; I used to respect them however, but in recent years they seem to have lost a step and spend too much time whining.

I mean- they just gave lowel a BIG deal......
the big difference is the Sox have been more fortunate
in their pitching FA...schilling, pedro, beckett, dice
vs the Yankees....
pavano, Brown, Johnson, Wright....etc
- oops- I just threw up in my mouth thinking of how AWFUL
cash has been with itching FA's

December 20, 2008  07:21 PM ET

A year or two ago I believe it was Gammons on ESPNRadio talking about who actually signed various players. Here's the list:

Jason Giambi - Mutual choice (George, Cashman, Tampa Bay group) Torre wanted Tino back
A-Rod - Mutual choice
Hideki Matsui - Mutual choice
Carl Pavano - Mutual choice
Womack - Tampa Bay/George
Gary Sheffield - Tampa Bay/George (Vlad was 90% signed - George over-ruled)
Jared Wright - Tampa Bay/George
Mike Stanton - Tampa Bay/George
Randy Johnson - Tampa Bay/George
Kevin Brown - Cashman

So Cash has had some bad signings, but not all were his fault.
