Sources: Red Sox, Boras playing chicken

As the shock of Thursday night yielded to murkiness yesterday, a shared feeling emerged among baseball sources that the Red Sox, despite owner John Henry's declaration the club was "not going to be a factor," remain a prominent - if not primary - player in the bidding for free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira. "I still believe the Red Sox have the best offer on the table," one general manager involved with Teixeira said yesterday morning. "I think this is a negotiating ploy." In baseball circles, Henry's e-mail to the media Thursday night - "We met with Mr. Teixeira and were very much impressed with him. After hearing about his other offers, however, it seems clear that we are not going to be a factor" - was taken not as a definitive statement, but as a gambit to offset agent Scott Boras's negotiating strategy. Sources believed the "other offers" might not exist, contrived by Boras to hike the Red Sox offer. The Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals did not increase their offers to Teixeira as of Thursday night, sources said. Los Angeles Angels general manager Tony Reagins indicated to the Los Angeles Times that the team had not increased its original offer, reported by various outlets to be for eight years and $160 million.

ANy time Scott Boras is involved, you have to keep your cards close to the vest....

JR, Just getting in or going out ? Looks like a good morning for golf. Just guessing.

December 20, 2008  07:15 AM ET

I hope Scott Boras invested his millions with Bernie Madoff. Those two **** deserve to go down in flames together. All that aside I still hope the Sox still sign Teixeira.

December 20, 2008  07:21 AM ET

Okay, so how is Boras related to Selig?

December 20, 2008  07:48 AM ET

This is getting boring. He said he wanted to know where he was going to play before Christmas but only he controls that.

very boring

Agreed, boring! It will be nice if they sign him, but Boras could screw it up just to prove he has the biggest ones in town!
I like John Henry's attitude though; don't play Boras' game except on the Sox's terms.

Tex is certainly the #1 FA position player on the market
and is a solid player.....
but he ain't THAT good-
he's going to give you roughly 300, 32, 110....GREAT #'s
but he isn't a top ten (position) player -
and NOT worth a 8+ year investment for more than 20 mil per
- whomever signs him will be getting a good player-
but is he really someone that will 'carry' a team on his back ?
I personally don't think so.....based on opinion and recent history

Millionaires dickering with other millionaires over OUR entertainment money! The longer this goes on the angrier I get with all of them. Even if the Sox don't get Teix I'll still watch them....even Kansas City has loyal fans. It's the Game I love, not spoiled multi-millionaires in a worldwide recession.

The Sox don't need him to carry the team, just contribute those numbers you posted. If he does that for them 8 years in a row, they would consider it money well spent.
Actually, the Yanks & Angels don't need him to carry the offense either. The Orioles on the other hand, will need more from him if they hope to contend.

December 20, 2008  09:46 AM ET

BTW, I'm not ready to write off Kingfisher as some kind of crackpot just yet. I don't know him and don't have any idea if he is telling the truth or just making up a good story to suit his desires. I'll just let others bash him and see where this all goes.

December 20, 2008  09:50 AM ET

He has two choices and only two. The Angels or Red Sox. The Nationals are not a part of it.

December 20, 2008  09:52 AM ET

Ok, how about Congress and MLB ignore antitrust laws against collusion and allow every baseball team to agree to refuse to work with Scott Boras? As a Pirates' fann we rarely deal with him as we are way too pathetic and cheap, but I cannot imagine being a Sox, Yankees or Dodgers and Cubs fan signing multiple players of his. He is like the zit that won't go away.

I do agree with you-
but for the $$ and years they would have to gve him
to me- that's a 'franchise' type player-
- just not sure if he's worth that investment-
his HR's have declined over the last few years-
though his avg has gone up a bit.....

December 20, 2008  10:02 AM ET

Tex is a hired gun. Being a Braves fan, I hope those guys we got in the trade with the Angels work out.

December 20, 2008  10:39 AM ET

Let him go play for the Nats for 8 years. Good times :-) Im sure he will thank Boras for that move.

They may be playing chicken, but IMO Henry didn't have to walk out of the meeting and immediately email the media. Kinda juvenile, IMO. He coulda still played chicken w/o dragging us all into it.

Haha! Which makes this article so silly - according to Kingfisher, Tex has completed his physical and signed with Baltimore as of 2:00 p.m. yesterday. They're just keeping it a BIG secret. VERY big.
