Refs' calls against Lions in question

As the Lions teeter on the brink of NFL infamy, there is a growing sentiment that referees have been somewhat complicit in helping them get there. Fans are growing more irate over questionable calls. Television announcers are voicing disbelief, and even the Lions are coming dangerously close to calling out the officials. Of course, no player rushes to openly criticize specific calls, which is a fineable offense. But there is a feeling among some Lions that game officials are looking upon them with a jaundiced eye. What results is a perception that bad teams do not get good calls.

This shows that the games are fixed.

booooooooooooooooooo! whatever, all teams have had "phantom" or bogus calls against them, its the nature of the beast. dont try and blame your futility on the refs. i mean the lions are gonna be forever etched in the **** of nfl history....

truth be told tho, dont be surprised if they pull the upset this week just a hunch

Yeah the Lions are 0-14 because of the refs! It has nothing to do with their bad coaching, terrible management or D level talent. They have an opportunity to win their final two games as the Saints and Packers both have zilch to play for. If they go 0-16, they have no on to blame but themselves.

December 20, 2008  09:03 AM ET

Hey, they're just trying to ensure they get that first round pick and the best receiver our there.

December 20, 2008  09:14 AM ET

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!....why can't they just really really suck! It's nobodys fault but the franchise itself. The defense couldn't stop a rolling tumbleweed. Marinelli is a rah rah guy who doesn't belong in a headset. Two words. Dan Orlovsky.

Bad calls are a part of the game for all teams, and in all sports.

December 20, 2008  09:29 AM ET

the refs are in question? are you kidding me what about the offense, defense and special teams. don't forget all those first round draft picks at WR they have. What about that stellar talent on both sides of the ball that Millen assembled. The owner that got rid of Millen 4 years too late. nah none of those things could be the culprit, must be the refs.

The story this year to me is that I think the quality of officials in the NFL is declining. There needs to be a serious review by the league of what is and is not a penalty. There is little consistency from week to week. Holding has been eliminated, at the leagues request. Pass interference is fluid, changes from week to week.
This should be the focus in the off season by the league. And working out a new contract of course.

weaker games always get the weaker refs. and the weaker calls. as a bengals fan, i'm used to seeing the three blind mice on the field wearing black & white stripes at home games.

the nfl office even did it to the bengals after the jags game when the review of the eye gouging incident was overlooked. any player doing that to tom brady or romo would have been suspended for a season. against a bengal, its not even actionable from the league office.

the nfl doesn't waste their time on teams with poor records or poor ownership.

Normally I would agree but with the Ed Hocholi (sp?) incident in Denver this year and the incident in the Pittsburgh/Ravens game, something else is going on here.

At least Ed admitted he made a mistake........these guys never did to my knowledge.

The Lions lost against the Vikes the first game due to a phantom Pass interference call. Yea the Lions suck but they have been getting screwed by the refs ALOT!!! Mostly on Calvin getting blasted before he has the ball but getting no PI calls. Even the announcers have said how bad the officiating is against the Lions and im not talking about the local guys either. Yea lots of teams have had bad calls but the Lions are getting screwed every game.

some should sue detroit for using the name lions.it's an insult to the real lions who are full of energy fight, hard are not lackadaisical and are winners oh they don't complaint also

Yeah, honestly, they do have cause for complaint.

Though really, so do a lot of other teams. I do think the quality of officiating is declining, and the league needs to work on the problem instead of just fining everyone and burying its head in the sand.

December 20, 2008  01:58 PM ET

It's tough when even the refs treat you like you suck! BTW, I do agree with those who think officiating is declining. Never seen so many bad calls in my life as I've seen in the last couple of years. Some officials seem determined to help the game and others to influence the outcome.

Nawh! There's no difference! Real lions sleep 16 to 20 hours a day, just like the Detroit Lions. The only difference is the Detroit Lions sleep during games!

I would love to see a stat that reveals the percentage of bad calls that are made year to year and see if there has been a genuine rise this year or if it is just perception. I'd also love to see the Lions go 0-16. That would be the consolation prize for seeing the Patriots miss 19-0 by only three points.

No, it shows that refs are human.

You'll never see that kind of stat. There's no point. But there is the perception that there have been more bad calls this year than in recent times.

As for the Lions going 0-16, what possible benefit is it to anyone, other than haters? I'm damned if I can figure out the connection between the Pats getting beaten last year and the Lions not winning this year.

At least the Bucs had an excuse. They were an expansion team. There's none for the Lions.

Do the referees tend to call more close plays against a team they perceive as losers? I have seen no evidence for or against this, merely opinions. I can, however, see how even the most "objective" referee might unconsciously lean toward the team perceived as better on a close play.

I do agree that if this kind of thing is occurring, it does not only affect the Lions. Perhaps in their pursuit of a perfect record, the Lions are in the most vulnerable position?
