Angels defeat Anaheim in court

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim can keep their name after all. In a ruling expected to end a legal challenge from the city of Anaheim that lasted nearly four years, a state appellate court today declined to set aside a jury verdict in favor of the Angels. The city is expected to drop the case rather than pursue its lone remaining legal option, an appeal to the California Supreme Court. City officials were not immediately available for comment. Moreno implemented the name change after the city spurned his overtures toward a negotiated agreement that would allow the team to be called the Los Angeles Angels. By affiliating the team with Los Angeles, Moreno said, he could broaden the fan base, enhancing interest and revenue from advertisers and broadcasters. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim name, adopted solely to comply with the lease, has been widely mocked. However, the name does not figure to survive beyond 2016. The Angels can opt out of their stadium lease at that time, and Moreno does not figure to agree to a new lease -- in Anaheim or elsewhere -- without the right to call his team the Los Angeles Angels.

Thank God for lawyers! What a ridiculous lawsuit. Maybe they should go the Prince route and make up some symbols for an identity or better yet do a reality show like The Hills. How about the first numeric team, they could be known as their zipcode, 92806. Man, I hate stupid people et al. lawyers.

Why not just go with the California Angels? Look I saved you 3 million in Lawyer fees. :-)

This will be great when Moreno moves the team to San Antonio in 2016 and will begin to call the team the "Los Angeles Angels of San Antonio via Anaheim." No wonder the Angels of Whatever City suck year after year since Moreno bought the team.

Remember the rat infestation?

Arte Moreno made his fortunes in advertising and he thought he could make more money by changing the name and adding L.A. and taking out Anaheim. Because of the loophole he was able to change the name but Anaheim had to be included in there as well, hence the incredibly stupid name they now have which I hate so much I can't even write. Arte made billions in advertising and selling stuff so I'm sure he has a big ego and it's hard to tell him he's wrong and for him to except that he may be wrong when it comes to any decisions he makes, but Arte as great as you are and as much money as you're made in the past you're not perfect and you're bound to make mistakes. This is one of them. PLEASE change the name back to The Anaheim Angels! It sounds so much better and you only alienate the Anaheim and Orange County fans and irritate the L.A. fans when you try to use their city as a marketing gimmick.
The Angels play in Anaheim, not L.A. If you want to expand the fan base keep producing a great product and a winning team and the fans will come. Fans always follow winners. They don't follow a team because of stupid name. I'm an Angels fan and I still support them but the name change does anger me and I still refer to them as The Anaheim Angels. I've signed petitions to get the Arte Moreno to change the name but to no avail. I still attend Angels games but it's not the same experience as it used to be when they were The Anaheim Angels. Their new name just makes it hard to be enjoy the whole Angels baseball experience and as mention in previous reports and in the comments made in this section, its also been the subject of ridicule everywhere. Everyone sees the name as a joke and incredibly stupid, why can't you see that as well? Don't change the name to The California Angels or any other name other than The Anaheim Angels. Please do it for the fans and give Anaheim an identity of its own, one where it doesn't have to try and piggy back off a trashy city like los angeles.

Thats a no brainer

The Angels are not even located in Los Angeles, let alone Los Angeles County. This would be no different than the Oakland A's changing their name to the San Francisco A's. The Angels are making a blatantly false claim regarding their location. The City of Anaheim and Orange County establish their ordinances, as well as benefit from their business via tax revenues that THEY can put towards their city's well being, LA does not. If they want to claim LA, then they should start paying taxes, otherwise, they need to **** with this LA Angels of Anaheim BS and change their name back.

the angels better stay in anaheim. i don't care about the name change. but they better not leave orange county. orange county has been loyal to the angels since 2002. we average more fans than the dodgers.

the angels suck. they only won 100 games last season and have 3 all star pitchers on their starting staff. and they only have one of the best minor league farm systems. and they only have one of the best managers in baseball. and they only have a owner who cares about the fans. hes so stupid. he lowered ticket prices and beer prices at the stadium. and signs big free agents. (i'm being sarcastic) i have to mention that. because most people who have posted comments. have no idea what they're talking about.

December 20, 2008  05:16 PM ET

what about the new york giants or the new york jets. they don't even play in the state of new york. what about the dallas cowboys. they don't play in dallas. what about the tampa bay rays they don't play in tampa bay. so stop talking about the angels. anaheim is fairly close to la. moreno needed to do this. because the la media didn't any intentions to the angel. even though they are a much better all around team then the dodgers. now the la times talk about the angels more than the dodgers.

December 20, 2008  05:18 PM ET

why do people always talk crap on angels stadium. commissioner bud selig said it was one of his favorite ball parks. and thats why its hosting the 2010 all star game.

Finally...thank you for pointing this out to everyone who doesn't have a clue. The L.A. Rams played in the same stadium and yadda yadda yadda...get over it. Arte Moreno's job as owner of the Angels is to make progressive moves to make his team the best and increase profits for the franchise. A name change makes all the difference in the world. The Cowboys would not get the big market attention or sponsorship if they were the "Irvin Cowboys". Nor would the New Jersey Giants and Jets. That's the reason the Nets are being moved back to NY, that's why if the Buffalo Bills were to claim NYC their revenues would go up.

Do any of you understand how to run a business? You all want him to spend the big money on Tex and other big players..... Well it takes money to pay them. Do you expect him to run this business at a loss each year? Whey do you think Disney never paid any big contracts? Just because they are Disney or Arte Moreno does not mean that all they do is dip into their money and spend it. The company needs to make a profit or it does not make sense. In order to make a profit, you need to have a larger market area and be able to charge more for advertising. Get over it.... it's just a name... Does it really matter...Do you really feel excluded..Who cares what the Dodger fans say or think....
