After Mexico squad lost to the U.S., 2-1, in the Gold Cup final, some reports already have Hugo Sanchez, named Mexico's coach six months ago, possibly being replaced by previous World Cup coaches Ricardo La Volpe and Javier Aguirre. Stories also surfaced that some of the core players on the national team no longer wanted to play for Sanchez.

So far I havn't seenhim actually put his stamp on the team. He and Bradley got the job at the same time and you see the transformation in the US side, but what have you noticed about Mexico's? They have been just kinda showing up for games and wondering when it will be over, kinda like thier coach! get rid of him!

June 26, 2007  08:17 AM ET

dudes mouth is why people hate him so much, he talks too much trash and he thinks he's so full of himself. He made Lavolpe's life hell when Mavolpe was the coach. Lavolpe had Mexico playing the greatest ball ever. they were a great team, mexico's biggest mistake was letting him go then signing this loudmouth up.

Sanchez needs to be fired. Like, now. Or, at the very latest, after the Copa America. Mexico needs to find the right manager to bring out the best in Guardado, Castillo, etc. and who has the stones to retire Blanco.

June 26, 2007  09:44 AM ET

bring in scolari

June 26, 2007  09:47 AM ET

oooh scolari would be sweet. or sven-goran ericcson, maybe? lavolpe as well

June 26, 2007  10:24 AM ET

It doesnt matter who Mexico gets to coach them. Their national team and the US MNT are going in opposite directions. The Mexicans in general are too small and can't compete with the US and certainly not with any world powers.

June 26, 2007  10:46 AM ET

Mexico can play, so let's not bash them, but Sanchez, who i completely respect as a player, has not done the job. he has lost twice to the US, he took a loss at Azteca, which hadn't happened in 10-12 years, and he also lost to Honduras. on the other hand Bob B. is 10-0-1 for Hugo's arch-rival. if El Tri does not do well at CA, he needs to be let go.

June 26, 2007  10:56 AM ET

They need to give him a "Dirty Sanchez". He's not thinking about there future at all. Borgetti and Blanco are still quality players but probably aren't going to be there in 2010. I've never seen a coach complain to the officials so much. My wife's father is mexican so we cheer for both teams equally in our household and I believe it is time for him to go.

June 26, 2007  11:11 AM ET

Copa America is make or break for Sanchez. His team hasn't necessarily stepped up over the last year. They seem to have taken a step backwards. He had the Mexican team playing well for the Gold Cup final. Despite the loss, they looked much better than they had in the earlier rounds of the tournament. If Sanchez gets a quality result at Copa America, maybe he can save his job.

June 26, 2007  12:17 PM ET

I agree that it's this guys mouths. I was really upset about his remarks when we beat El Tri about how we are wussies. I'm glad we've proved him wrong three times since then. El Tri has GREAT potential, but they need to stop making excuses for poor play and that starts with the coach. I echo the opinion of GET RID OF SANCHEZ!!

June 26, 2007  12:31 PM ET

What are you guys talking about? He is GREAT....at making excuses!!! That's all he has done since coming on board, they have too many talented guys to not get anything done, their best game in the Copa Oro was against the US and they STILL lost! It's time to say goodbye to the
"Pentapichichi", agreed he was a great player but not a good coach, not for the national team. He did good with Pumas, but national team is a whole nother beast. Even just bringing LaVolpe back would be a step forward, but Scolari would be the best, although i don't think he is available :(

June 26, 2007  12:37 PM ET

Mexico need to axe this guy before the COPA and bring in someone else an asst coach for the time being all Sanchez is is a big fat distraction. Common he is supposed to be building a team for the future but you dont see any of the Mexicans except for Guadardo starting for the full nationals that won the U-19 world cup like last year. Where is Carlos Vela? the other playmaking striker this is ridiculous he doesnt even get a run out but he plays in La Liga second division screw Borgetti he faked an injury just because gooch and Bocanegra owned him on the pitch

mexico has talent i think Pardo showed that but Guadardo and Vela are the future for this squad so start playing them

June 26, 2007  01:11 PM ET

I say this VERY grudgingly, but the best course of action is to at least give Sanchez the Copa America to redeem himself. Granted, he'll have to do quite a bit there to do so (make good on his stated semi-final ambition, and absolutely no less), but at least grant him the shot, if only because there's really no other sensible option left now anyway. It's obviously far too late to hastily pull in an interim coach for the Copa. Doing so would only make things worse.

I personally think the man is a poison to the Mexican team and I fully expect the Copa America to end up proving it once and for all, but if I'm wrong and El Tri ends up doing as well in the Copa as Sanchez has claimed they will, even I'll be forced to reevaluate my opinion. People would immediately forget all about the Gold Cup failure and the embarrassing Azteca loss.

June 26, 2007  01:27 PM ET

I agree, Copa America should be the final deciding factor for Hugito as the national coach. I just don't see it happening, personally i think Argentina look way too tough, especially since they have a squad at full strength. He has been detrimental to the team and their mentality since he got there. Sorry Hugito your mouth wrote checks that you couldn't cash and now you are neck deep in it.

Arsenal - The reason Carlos Vela, Giovanni Dos Santos and the rest of the U-17 WC winners are not on the squad yet is because they are preparing for the U-20 WC which is in Canada and set to start soon.
But yet another reason why Hugo has got to go, way too many younger talented guys coming up in the ranks very soon, they will definitely be ready for 2010!

Barca = Mes que un club!

June 26, 2007  01:41 PM ET

Hope they dump him. True, if they cannot do well in the Copa America, that should be the deciding factor to see if he stays or not. But losing to the US so many times doesn't look to good, even if we have a strong side.

June 26, 2007  02:04 PM ET

I cant help but think Castillo, Guadardo, Vela, and Dos Santos are way better than Borgetti, Blanco, Bravo doesnt matter how old they are they should have gotten the call up to be a full international

June 26, 2007  02:36 PM ET

It's a shame to see S??nchez in this position, and I think he should get at least a full year to a year and a half to sort out his team. It's true that he made his own bed by undermining Lavolpe for years and raising expectations for his own tenure as Tri coach through the roof, but little is served by changing coaches this quickly. They have to get through Copa America and weigh the talent they will pool for WC qualifying. Even though there are reports that there is division among players- Lavolpistas vs. Huguistas- it's unfair to paint the issue as a choice between two coaches at this point. Lavolpe ain't likely coming back, and even if he did, many of the same choices would remain, like what the future attack is going to be once Borgetti and Cuauh are gone for good.

June 26, 2007  03:33 PM ET

arsenalfan4ever hit the nail on the head: Sanchez thinks it's 1998 and he can win with Blanco and Borgetti. True, there is no Mexican striker like Borgetti but Vela, Guardado, Castillo, and Dos Santos (both of them) are the present and the future. Sanchez is really good at sniping but he can't back his words up. Pumas won 2 consecutive titles with him at the helm but they won in spite of him, not because of him.

The fact that his team was woefully underprepared for the Gold Cup speaks volumes. And when they get eliminated quickly from the Copa America, he should be canned.

Mexico should NOT bring back LaVolpe. Nor should they hire Big Phil. And I hope the guy who suggested Erikson was kidding. I don't know who they should hire. Whoever it is should be Mexican and MUST be a tactician and someone who is inclusive, rather than divisive. (With all that said, the Mexican Football Federation really should change their expectations: they're no longer an automatic top 10 team world wide. Accept it and move to improve it.)

June 26, 2007  03:34 PM ET

Apologies for the double post...

tambocha: the future of Mexico's attack was on full display. Castillo and Guardado from the wings and Bravo up front. Add to that Dos Santos and you've got three good attacking mids and a good striker.

Speaking as a U.S. MNT fan, please keep him around. He's a total disaster.
