Arizona-Boston trade in making?

The D-backs are still strapped for cash and the Red Sox still need a fourth outfielder, so don't be surprised if Eric Byrnes-to-Boston rumors revive. There was briefly talk of a Julio Lugo-for-Byrnes swap, but Arizona instead elected to acquire Felipe Lopez to play second base. But there's still some wiggle room for a bigger deal that could include catcher Miguel Montero.

he is what he is at this point in his career-
a nice 4th OF off the bench
a little pop in his bat, a 265 avg and will give you the
occasional spectacular play - which makes you think
he is better than he actually is.

Byrnes would be great in Boston.

He's no Kenny Lofton...........

we need a catcher also, and some more pitching, and now looks like the yankee's will sign texiera...not looking like a real good year coming up

BYRNES SHOULDNT GO TO BOSTON HE DONT WANT TO SIT ON THE BENCH

The moment the Yankees sign Tex, you will see the other 29 owners scream for a salary cap. That would be half a billion dollars in contracts.

He wouldnt be on the bench all that often with Nancy Drew being injured all the time and Ellisbury still putting it all together. Francona is very very good at rotating players and keeping everyone happy. Byrnes has personality to so he would be well liked in Boston i think. I bit on the expensive side though.

December 21, 2008  12:28 PM ET

It would be a good move by the Sox if they can get him. Drew is usually good for at least 1 trip to the DL annually so they need a good 4th of on the bench because odds are he will get a lot of at bats.

December 21, 2008  12:44 PM ET

At this point they are only going to get him if Miguel Montero is included in the deal. That would mean we would probably lose either Daniel Bard or Michael Bowden. In any case, I think they should sign Rocco Baldelli as the fourth outfielder and trade Clay Bucholz for Jarod Saltalamacchia. Salty will be loved in Boston for years to come.

Byrnes would be great in Boston. He could spell JD and Ellsbury, and not playing every day could extend his career. He always seems to be hurt.

OOooohhhhhhh, my man!!!!

far be it for me to try and cheer up a sux fan....but you have the team that was 1 game from the world series returning intact.

but there will be rejoicing all across the land when the sux get back in it and sign him...hypocrites

He is better than a fourth outfielder if he is healthy. I would be jealous if you guys get him Brynes plays so hard the man is a winner.

Seriously, why are the Yankees and Red Sox the only teams sucking up all the free agent players?!

December 21, 2008  02:29 PM ET

they aren't the only ones... they are the only ones that are getting reported... That and the big money usually involved.

The Red Sox have yet to sign any free agent this off season sooooooo what are you talking about?

Does this story have any substance to it at all, or is it just some writer with some time on his hands speculating.

2010 or 2011 is when the Yankees will be dominant again. Not next year..

Byrnes is already going to be sitting on the bench in Arizona -- the OF starters for the Dbacks this year will be Conor Jackson in LF, Chris Young in CF, and Justin Upton in RF. The Dbacks already have other AAAA guys to spell them, so Byrnes is an overpriced 4th OF for us.

What a stupid contract. Freaking Jeff Moorad.

If you click on the link, you'll find that the entire extent of the story is reproduced above. It's just a single paragraph of speculation.

I really wish it were true, though.

I'd be upset to lose Miggy, but Miggy is stuck behind Chris Snyder in AZ, so trading both Eric Byrnes and Miguel Montero for pitching and/or middle IF means we're trading from a position of strength to get a position of need. Byrnes, when healthy, makes a great 4th OF and a decent starter, but Arizona can't afford to have that kind of money tied up with him.
