Red Sox balking at Rangers' price

There are strong indications that the Red Sox do not want to deal Clay Buchholz for a catching prospect. This could jeopardize any deal with Texas for Taylor Teagarden or Jarrod Saltalamacchia, though you never know if the Rangers would settle for someone like Daniel Bard. The Sox seem adamant about keeping Buchholz and Justin Masterson, and almost as adamant about Michael Bowden. Suffice to say, it looks as if the Sox might let this play out a bit.

Theo is smart. He knows you never, ever trade a good young arm for a catcher.

In general I would absolutely agree with you.....
but the Sox really have an abundance of good young arms
and there really aren't many good all-around catchers

They really need a catcher going forwards & if they can
get someone that can be their everyday catcher for the
next 5 years or so...I think you gotta pull the trigger

I hope thet deal Buchholz or Bowden and hold onto Masterson.

December 21, 2008  10:06 AM ET

gotta do it, we need catching, someone young and good who will be around for awhile. we can sacrifice bucholz, not sure if he has the makeup to be a consistant winner anyway

December 21, 2008  10:07 AM ET

and definatly keep masterson, he can pitch under pressure

December 21, 2008  11:08 AM ET

Oh well. Theo can go suck a rock then, because the Rangers don't need to part with any of their remaining catchers. Maybe Theo can put on the pads and get down there to catch his pitchers?

My feelings exactly. Actually, I agree with Becca and Kevin too. The Sox are pitching rich right now and it is by design.

Theo has put an emphasis on coaching all of the pitchers in the farm system the same way from level to level. This sytematic aproach has the benefit of having a pitcher move from one level to the next without having to change his approach or learn new terminology. Very comforting for a young player, eh.
Move Buchholz while his value is still high, the Sox need a good catcher more than they need another young pitcher who "might' be consistently good someday.

Sounds like the Red Ros are on welfare? Eerily familiar, but very funny and entertaining. Get to business and kiss up with the masters of the game who have some 25+ World Series Crowns.

what happened to bucholz being so amazing? red sox fans were wrong

December 21, 2008  11:33 AM ET

Oh, I'm sorry, did I miss all the young, can't miss Yankees? Let's see.....

Melky Cabrera, can't get on the field in front of a washed up Damon
Ian Kennedy, the one too good to send for Santana, can't get out of the minors.
Joba Chamberlin, 2 injuries already.....
Phillip Hughes, hasn't lived up to the hype.
Robinson Cano, gets benched for mailing it in.

Did I miss anybody? At least with Buchholz, you have seen his promise play out, he was injured last year but is pitching very well in the Fall League.

He pitched some nice innings this year...

Sox need to make a deal. They need a catcher. They have a boatload of young pitching in their system. The Rangers need pitching. They have a lot of catchers. This deal should have been done weeks ago as it benefits both teams right away.

December 21, 2008  01:04 PM ET

I guess Buchholz will be putting on the pads for the Sox this year. As difficultas it is to find good young pitchers, it's even more difficult to find a good young catcher.

December 21, 2008  01:54 PM ET

theo is mad cause jd raped him on the gagne deal. now he's hesistant on trading the rangers buchholz for salty. i do agree, however, that the trade would definately help both teams.

jd should not back down from his asking price. the rangers have no pressure going into next season, the red sox do. let them resign varitek and his .200 avg. maybe by midseason, theo will fold under the pressure and do the deal.

That's right Telly, never trade a pitcher for a catcher. Mmmmmm!

He still could very well be a front of the rotation starter in the future because he has nasty stuff. I think the question with him is if he can handle a place like Boston. I think they are just exploring all options before pulling the trigger. Why move him if you dont absolutely need to? There is a reason why teams want him so bad and the Sox want to keep him so bad. People around here (New England) dont seem to understand that players take time to develop. They think they should just be a hall of famer from day one or they are garbage. If they get rid of Bucholz for a catcher whos proved even less than he has that would be dumb. As a Yankees fan you should talk because you guys havent been axactley saints about Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy. Cano is gonna be awesome someday and the Yankees act like hes trash.

However most of those 25 had nothing to do with spending money but by having the best scouts and gm's in the business. All the pre 1977 championships were won because of having gm's like George Weiss for many years and Lee Macphial before him. The Yankees knew talent and knew how to get it without spending mega bucks.

word nrvana, you couldn't be more right. Your also right for being the only one to mention the rangers and not the sawx or the yanks, who have nothing to do with this story.
