New Vols coach takes jab at Spurrier

New Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin couldn't resist making one little joke about Steve Spurrier. It comes with the territory as coach of the Volunteers. The South Carolina coach, who had a history of making jokes at former Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer's expense, questioned earlier this month whether Kiffin contacted recruits before he had passed the NCAA test that allows him to do so. Kiffin was asked Saturday during his second public appearance as Tennessee coach if he was worried about "ruffling a few feathers" in the Southeastern Conference coaching community. He had this to say: ???I???m not concerned about that. If Steve???s concerned about my test, I got a 39 out of 40. I???d like to see what he got.??? Kiffin said earlier this month that he took the NCAA recruiting test several days before he was introduced as coach and began contacting recruits on the first morning he was allowed to. Spurrier once famously quipped ???you can???t spell Citrus without UT??? as a way of mocking Tennessee???s appearances in the Citrus Bowl after regularly losing to his Florida teams.

Little Stevie is no longer a gunslinger. He's that pitiful, worn-out, loud-mouthed drunk at the end of the bar who's always bragging about how good he USED to be... and no one cares any more.

He might want to think about winning first.

I just hope Kiffin can back it up cause if he cant in the first couple of years its going to get real "rocky" up in Knoxville real quick.

Steve is a tool of the highest degree, he has always put down his competitors. Winners win graciousley, like PF did, or Mark Richt. Go Vols. Kick the **** **** next year

December 21, 2008  05:49 PM ET

hopefully this will all build up to an exciting game next season, spurrier is, and always will be, a great coach, and i think kiffin is a great hire for tennessee, best of luck to both coaches.

don't really think its too smart to talk too much before you've even won one game. Wouldn't it be sweeter to say something after you beat the team. Talking before you have even held your first practice just seems silly to me. Kiffin has no idea of what kind of team he is going to have, none whatsoever. The reality is that UT is losing recruits and he should focus on that.

December 21, 2008  09:24 PM ET

He shouldn't let his crockadile mouth overload his hummingbird arse. Hopefully, Kiffin will be tougher at UT then he was at Oakland. I wouldn't under estimate Spurrier's ability to get in the head of another HC. Kiffin will have more talent to work with then Spurrier has, but let's see what he can do. Until Kiffin shows something, he should keep his trap shut. Daddy will be there to help him out, but you UT fans.....don't count your chickens.

First on everyone's list? What year are YOU stuck in? Stevie's days of being "first on everyone's list" are long since past. He's not even in the discussion when major vacancies come up.

BTW, Stevie coaching at UT? Not in this lifetime. The Vol faithful would have his head on a pike outside Neyland Stadium.

ok...number one: Spurrier "jabbed" at Kiffin to start, so this is a retort, not an initiation. Two: Kiffin isn't losing recruits. Herbert, the guy I'm sure you're talking about, decommitted when CPF was forced out and chose UF last week. And Giles did the same except he chose USClite. Kiffin is letting recruits know who will fit his system and if they decide against UT after that it's not "losing" recruits. I might add Saban did the EXACT same thing his first year and no one called it "losing" recruits then. I just love the fact that UT's rivals already despise our coach. It adds fuel to the fire. Can't wait till next season...win or lose I'm happy.
