08:33 AM ET 12.22 | Only the Yankees know how far they'll be willing to go to sign Manny Ramirez, but the slugger believes the Bombers will be a serious contender for his services. According to a source, Ramirez has told friends that he is confident the Yankees will offer him a contract of at least three years, one year longer than most team officials have said they would want to go. Ramirez has no plans to get serious about any offers until after Mark Teixeira - a fellow Scott Boras client - makes a decision regarding his own future. Ramirez has already turned down a two-year, $45 million offer from the Dodgers and has told friends he is seeking a four-year deal in the $100 million range.

Just cuz Manny wants a contract from the Yankees doesn't mean he's gonna get one. Yankees's won't make any offer until Tex decides where he is going.

Just shows us what a different world pro sports are....in this day and age of unemployment, bankruptcies, and fear a man that makes his living swinging a stick can EXPECT a multi-year million offer.....and will probably get it.

- tried to post- but it doesn't seem to have gone through-
apologies if it is a repeat....

I don't believe ANYTHING Manny says.
However- it would be a smart business move for the Yanks to make

indeed, truth....your forgot one thing...."a deranged man swinging a stick..."

it appears that a non deranged man swinging a stick, named tex, can get 8-10 yrs at $20MM+ per annum...

I remember the days when the league minimum was $62,500 and the avg salary was well below $1MM. Also remember the days when a million dollar contract was the total of the deal ($1MM over 8 yrs) vs. at least $1MM each year. Baseball has changed so much in the last 20 years.

December 22, 2008  09:04 AM ET

just show him the money and he will sign in a day

December 22, 2008  09:07 AM ET

Baseball should have a salary cap, I hope if hes a yankee , he has to cut that excuse for a hair doo...No athelete is worth all the Millions that they get...

Manny probably expects Santa Claus to show up at his house sometime Thursday morning and bring him an Xbox 360.

That being said, Manny is a lifetime .400 hitter and Yankees Stadium, maybe higher. As mildly retarded as he is, 3. Manny 4. A Rod is downright scary.

I'd rather throw 60 million at Manny for three years than Teixiera for 190 mil + for 8 years.

Maybe YOU should get back to your XBox Manny is not a lifetime .400 hitter, put the crackpipe down.

December 22, 2008  09:45 AM ET

Manny will be in L.A somewhere.

December 22, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Oh look it's just Manny being Manny...

MUCK FANNY! How can this not be said 10 posts in?

December 22, 2008  10:02 AM ET

... and that's what capitalism dictates in every industry.

Why look at the ballplayers? What are the owners making financially? What about the CEO's of Adelphia, Merrill Lynch and JP Morgan?

Manny Ramirez produces at a hall of fame level and will get compensation based on what the market demands. That is the american way of capitalism.

Lifetime around .310... but probably hits .400 against the Yankees AND in Yankee Stadium...

.. although he will not be hitting in the old Yankee Stadium any longer.

Salary cap won't work in baseball and the players association won't let it happen. Too many teams can't spend 40 Million so if you make it 100 Mil they'll still cry poverty, have no one to pawn off their bad signings/contracts they can't afford on and they won't be able to get as many prospects for the guys they can no longer afford.

Have the teams that don't make money close up shop so there will be less teams and less jobs and maybe the players association will listen to a salary cap. It might help the Yanks. In Hockey the Rangers became much better (7 years no playoffs without the salary cap, 3 years with 2 trips to the 2nd round with) once they were no longer the team with the highest payroll and had to act responsibly.

Excellent points sir.

if the yankees get manny, they will probably have to trade damon or matsui to make room at dh for him. but even though its the yankees, manny will not get the money he wanted. 100 mill for a guy that is past his prime is crazy.

December 22, 2008  10:37 AM ET

i hope he signs with the yanks

Manny career at Yankee stadium (which has the same dimensions as the new one, right?).

.321 AVG, .405 OBP, .605 SLG, 1.010 OPS
