Richt wants college playoffs

Mark Richt has become an outspoken advocate for a college football playoff. Listen to him from a couple of days ago: "For the longest, I was like, 'I like it the way it is. I'm fine with it.' I'm not that way any more. I'm ready. I'm ready for a playoff. I'm ready for a four- or eight-team playoff. Having to live through last year and feeling like you've got to have this big filibuster or whatever you want to call it to go out there and try to convince people to vote for your team - I mean, it shouldn't be that way in sports, especially in major-college football. And [there's] the effect it has on the nation, which loves college football and probably deserves a better way of doing it." Richt went on to say that he senses sentiment shifting among coaches and even college presidents toward a playoff.

Translation:

I'm tired of playing in meaningless bowls because of my team's inability to get it done during the regular season, which is all but necessary to succeed in the current college football system.

Anybody with a brain knows there needs to be a playoff... the current system is just DUMB!!! Division 1AA has one, Division 2 and 3 have one.. so why can't D1?? it's stupid and the people running it are even dumber!!!

Of course Richt wants a playoff, then his team's bumbling during the regular season isn't quite as big of a deal...

I don't know why Mark Richt is crying his team is very overated, and the SEC is very weak this year compared to past years maybe third best conference in the nation behind the Big 12 and the Mountain West.

December 22, 2008  10:19 AM ET

This just points out one of the major stumbling blocks to a playoff; that it makes the regular season games less meaningful. He wants a playoff because he thinks that is his best chance to win a title without getting it done during the season. I am opposed to a playoff because it would make college football less intense during the season. And I am also tired of people like the above person calling everyone who doesn't agree with him dumb. Differing opinions make for a better system, name calling doesn't.

You are ready for a playoff coach???... Take a number

Are you *ucking kidding me? The Mountain West?

Go catch the short bus, wouldn't want to be late to remedial math class this morning.

I will buy the Big 12, but really? You think the SEC is weaker than the Mountain West? You must have been breathing too much of that thin mountain air. And yes, I know my team is crap this year, not an issue. Still, top to bottom the SEC is better than any conference outside of the Big 12.

other than Utah and TCU the Mountain West is a joke, if you want to put them ahead of the SEC based upon the performance of two teams that is ridiculous. (insert BYU defense) nope Arizona took care of that, and if you try and use the fact that the Mountain West was 6-2 against the Pac-10 that shows how worthless the Pac-10 is.

I love how yall say UGA doesn't get it done.

Please excuse us for having 2 losses last year, while the National Champion had...ummm...two losses last year. TENN had to win their last two games last year by easy missed FGs by Kentucky and Vanderbilt. One loss and UGA probably goes to the SEC championship and National Championship last year.

2002 UGA finishes 13-1 and doesn't even get a sniff. Same can be said for undefeated Auburn in 04. If either of those teams had played this year or last year, they're a lock to make the NC (well, maybe not UGA in 02).

And personally I'm against a playoff. And I don't think UGA deserved to get there last year or in 2002.

But for yall to say UGA hasn't gotten it done, come on. Look at LSU last year, they had to win their last game of the regular season to get to the NC and they lost at home to Arkansas. Then a bunch of teams lost in front of them and suddenly they're back in it. They didn't "get it done" either, but they got lucky, which is what it takes to win the NC.

UGA is behind only USC in Top 10 finishes since Mark Richt got to Georgia. He'll get his.

Honestly, I only hear people who want a playoff system because at that moment in time, the team would have benefitted.. Just like Urban Meyer from UF politicize the voting and afterward stating there should be a playoff, I do not hear much about it from him.. I give it that he has been busy but Richt is another case where the playoff would beneift his team last year and possible this year..

I am a playoff supporter but I am not great about that either because the bigger issue of the system (and the problem it has) is all about the $$$$... That is the issue... That is going to be the issue for playoff and the bowl systems.. Also, the second problem is each game counts and is very determined by conditions... Like the NFL, each team plays their divisional rivals 2 times (one home, one away).. We do not have that much time in college football but each game could very relative based on injuries and the state of that moment for both teams.. So games are not easy evaluation (and hence disparity among team fans... E.G. UT and Texas Tech and Texas Tech and OU).. Then add on the subjective voters, it makes playoff another political issue on who gets in and out... Then we could complain about the non-BCS conferences and how they get in or not (That is another story to itself)

December 22, 2008  12:12 PM ET

Agree. Being a Sooner fan, I totally understand. Oh wait, no I don't, we are in the national championship. Just kidding, but I would love to see a playoff. The bowl system is comparable to the electoral college. It is an old, archaic system that needs to replaced.

You think that maybe it's because people aren't asking him, since his team IS playing for the title ?

The only people who are in favor of a playoff either hate college football, or are so grossly uninformed that their opinions are worthless. A playoff is not needed, it never has been needed, and it never will be needed. These uninformed twits who insist on polluting the greatest of all sports with their idiotic nonsense should just shut the f#@k up and take their nonsense and go watch the NFL. The majority of real college fans, you know, the ones that actually went to school at one of the 119 or so D1A institutions, do not want a playoff. They are the ones that matter. The casual fans can get bent. Their collective opinions are as worthless as used toilet paper.

December 22, 2008  12:23 PM ET

For anyone who thinks that Richt was commenting for his 2008 team, then get a clue. He was talking about the 2007 team.

You do have one good point: the dawgs need to quit choking in the regular season if they want a national title.

Your team does not necessarily have to get "screwed" out of a NC spot to want a playoff; sometimes rational people see it as a better alternative.

I couldn't disagree more. I think the postseason would mean that much more to college football, and the bowls would still exist to give the real NCAA football fan more entertainment. It'll be hard work to institute a playoff with some sacrifice, but I honestly think it would be better to have a playoff.

talon5 - the SECriers are getting all over u for telling the truth. Yes, the SECriers are overrated, as they are every year. Their OutOfConf schedule is a joke. They seldom travel further than a bus ride, even during conference play. Their InConf away games are as close to a home game as u can get. Then u add in all the patsies that they play OutOfConf - troy, tulane, western ky, north texas, citadel, appSt, arkSt, norfolkSt, etc.....

Take florida last year, 9-4 record, with 3 big wins OutOfConf(westernKy, troy, tulane I think) -- oh my!!!!!!!! --- take away the scrimmage games and they are 6-4, LOL

Then in the CapitalOneBowl they lose to Michigan --- THIS IS THE SAME MICHIGAN who all the SECriers were laughing at for losing to AppalachiaSt early in the season.

Once again, the SECriers are no better or worse than the other big leagues. In fact this year the lowly ACC ruled the SECriers!!!!

I once had a SECrier fan say that the SECriers play OutOfConf patsies because their InConf games are soooo hard --- yah right, KY vandy missSt arkansas auburn tenn southCaro even georgia/alablabla(most yrs) --- WOW, what makes these teams tougher than any other leagues?????
This fan then went on to say that sometimes when the bowl games come around, the SECriers are tired by then from all these ruthless InConf games. He used this to explain the florida loss to michigan last year.
ANY ONE ELSE LAUGHING YET???? LOLOLOL
