Lions owner keeping front-office intact

You've got to be kidding. William Clay Ford Sr., with the garbage product he disguises as a football team, actually said he wanted his two-headed front-office team to RETURN next year? It's beyond belief, isn't it? On a day when the Lions players showed how truly awful they had become, the owner one-upped them in ineptitude. It was like the owner of the Titanic, as the ship was sinking, announcing, "Next I'm gonna build an airplane." Ford wins the prize. He is the worst. He is the biggest problem in this franchise and easily the most maddening. The fact he can contemplate returning anybody or anything from what already has tied the worst single-season losing streak in NFL history is incomprehensible. And yet there he was, telling a Booth Newspapers reporter before Sunday's 42-7 loss that he wanted Tom Lewand and Martin Mayhew back next year, possibly in their roles as chief operating officer and general manager. Those would be the current roles that have led to 0-15.

u cant just put the blame of those guys, millen really set this team back and they will be feeling those millen effects for a while to come. they have an opportunity to get some good pieces this year with all their draft picks and if a BIG time GM doesnt come available then theirs no need firing everybody "just because"

In the Business World, management is never at fault. I think the UAW is the problem with the Lions! If the UAW can be forced to take a pay cut, the Lions must improve. Or else, sell the Lions to the Japanese.

What front office? They're people with job titles, nothing more. They've been making bad decisions since signing Scott Mitchell to all those millions of dollars.

Matt's available ... so are several wide receivers in the draft ...

Definition of INSANITY! Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results!

December 22, 2008  09:30 AM ET

Great way to put a cap on the already terrbile Sunday for us in the D. Sighhhh.....

December 22, 2008  09:36 AM ET

Oh Dear Lord. I wonder if people across the country (or world) can even begin to understand how us lifetime Lions fans feel when we read a story like this.

December 22, 2008  09:41 AM ET

Wanted: new team to root for.

Must be willing to draft lineman.

If I'm a bit skiddish at first, please understand, I am just coming out of an abusive relationship.

LOL...as long as this owner continues to lead in his diliusional world...my Cleveland Browns won't be the worst team in the NFL. hahaha Thanks Detroit for at least making me feel like my team isn't the worst there is.

December 22, 2008  10:07 AM ET

Not only is this a bad FOOTBALL decision, its a worse BUSINESS decision, you think the stands were empty this year, just wait.... A lack of movement after a record settingly bad season will turn the fans against you and the team very quickly... as it should...

How we know why Ford Motor Company needs a bailout, it's run the sameway as the Detroit Lions....LOSE MONEY no problem / LOSE GAMES no problem same owner FORD

Actually Ford isnt getting a bailout only Chrysler and GM. Ford has enough cash right now.

December 22, 2008  10:37 AM ET

This isn't surprising at all. Isn't this the same guy who ran a hundred year old automobile company onto government assistance. This is the worst franchise in sports. I believe the Raiders sent the Lions a sympathy card.

So do the Lions. The problem is that the guy in charge of the purse strings has no clue, never has, never will. The Lions will not be a winning organization as long as William Clay Ford is in control of the team. Oh, and he is NOT getting smarter as he gets older.

December 22, 2008  10:49 AM ET

Matt Millen is the correct answer to every T&R...

December 22, 2008  10:55 AM ET

Ford has enough cash to get by a few months, but they will be there with their hands out eventually. Back to football though. The Ford's can't seem to manage anything at all. I wonder why with the state of their company that they don't just sell this team to someone who knows football.

It really felt like a kick in the stomach yesterday when they showed a Browns fan holding a sign making fun of the Lions. You know you have hit rock bottom when you get dissed by Cleveland fans.
The NFL needs to step in and take the Lions away from Ford or force Junior to take over for the old man. It will take years to clean up the Millen mess and they need to blow it all up and start from square one.

December 22, 2008  11:10 AM ET

Yes, because none of it possibly couldn't have been THEIR fault...

December 22, 2008  11:11 AM ET

I am to the point of just feeling bad for the Detroit fans. You would think that someone would want to step up and make this team at least competent. It is blatantly obvious that Ford has completely lost all grasp of reality.
