Red Sox still favorites to land Teixeira

Things appear to be heating up in the Mark Teixeira talks, and baseball people believe now that Teixeira will have a new team before Christmas. The Angels' decision Sunday to drop out of the derby seems to have crystallized things for Teixeira, the 28-year-old first base star who's choosing between the Red Sox, Nationals and Orioles, and perhaps the Yankees. The likely deal is expected to be for close to $180 million, though the final figure depends upon which team Teixeira selects. The Red Sox, disappointed when they failed to make a deal with Teixeira late last week, are still viewed as the favorite by most executives on other teams, though it's not known whether that's inside information or guesswork. While most free agents tend to take the highest offer, there's skepticism that a player of Teixeira's stature would choose teams like the Nationals or Orioles, who appear to be at least a couple years away from contention. The Red Sox are clearly still involved in talks, even after owner John Henry said they were "not going to be a factor'' after a meeting requested by Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein at Teixeira's Dallas-area home.

It's about time the Sox dipped into the fee agent market. I'm sick of them acting like Scrouge every year.

he'll probably end up with the sox. they're gonna need him after all the pitching changes the yankees have made. the suspense is killing me!

yankees rule, red sox drool.

Who gets Tex? Who cares at this point. I bet he takes the money and goes to the Nats, just like ARod did with the Rangers. Boras wants that commission, after all, season tix aren't getting any cheaper.

He's going to the Nads and I'm laughing my arse off.

December 23, 2008  07:19 AM ET

this HAS to happen today

December 23, 2008  07:21 AM ET

the nats just upped their offer, that means that this will go on for AT LEAST another week while boras tried to get the red sox to counter.

Boston cant match these higher offers. Unless this idiot just wants to contend every year he is NOT going to BOSTON. The Nads and Orioles will over spend to draw fans. Plain and simple. And this dude obviously is out for the highest offer. DedSox wont make playoffs without him in 2009 though.

ded sox. 10 points for originality. i like it

Why is that, Tony? They just got to the Game 7 of the ALCS and that team is very much in tact. Yes, Lowell needs to be healthy, but what other holes are there?

I'd put down money if he wasn't a Boras client this would already be done and over. Probably would've just resigned with the Angels and wouldn't be worried about the mighty dollar as long as it was a fair offer. My disgust for Borass grows every year.

Thought we would try something new that hasn't been beat to death with a stick yet. So the consensus was to talk about Texeira.

I actually have a small amount of work to do that I will spread over the entire day since this is the last day of the week for me.
