Following in Joe Flacco's footsteps, Pat Devlin became the latest high-profile recruit to transfer out of a Division I-A program and onto the roster of Division I-AA Delaware when the former Penn State quarterback committed to the Blue Hens yesterday. Devlin, a former high school all-American at Downingtown East High, gave coach K.C. Keeler his pledge after a visit to the Newark campus over the weekend, according to a source close to Devlin. With this move, the redshirt sophomore is hoping to repeat Flacco's success at Delaware. A transfer from Pittsburgh, Flacco wound up being drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of April's NFL draft. Flacco lost a year of eligibility because Pitt would not sign off on his scholarship, but Devlin is expected to have two seasons with the Blue Hens starting this fall.

As a Delaware alumnus, we need a better QB this season. The team could not score points and the defense was on the field too much.

This is going to become a trend! If you can't make it at the Division 1 level then go play lesser competition and collect an NFL paycheck.

Flacco is good and will be a nice starter in the league for years to come but it's not going to work out that way for everybody.

Sounds like PSU screwed over Devlin and didn't give him the opportunity he seemed to deserve. But, PSU will be getting ex UM commit Kevin Newsome. Can't wait to see UM sack the crap outta him.

Just like they did this year?

I called it first!!!! Check last week TNR article about this and I called it first!!! I said that Devlin would transfer to Deleware, put up good stats, get drafted in the middle 1st and have a good rookie season!!!

I nailed that one!!

As Rick Flair would say.......WHOOOOO!!!!!!!!

December 23, 2008  11:47 AM ET

I didn't know that about Joe Flacco losing a year of eligibility due to Pitt not releasing him. First, how short sighted was that of the Pitt staff. Ohhhh, I forgot who is the head coach there. Of course Dave Wanstedt being the 'class' act (with an emphasis on the last three letters of the quoted word) that he is Flacco lucked out. Instead of leading the Ravens to a win over the Cowboys he might have been slogging away for the Blue Hens perhaps getting his knee popped against William & Mary or somebody like that.

PSU can thank Pat Devlin for saving the day against Ohio State. Not sure why he transferred as it seemed he would be the starter next year, but who knows what is going on and if he would have any decent receivers to through to.

Actually sir, it should be "you're an idiot", as is the shortened version of "you are an idiot."
Check back again later when you learn proper grammer.

I do want to ask, would a person who's name is bobdole96 calling me an idiot the same as the kettle calling the pot black? Just curious.

But for the record, I CALLED IT FIRST!!!!!!!

With Clark having one more year, and after leading PSU to an 11 (soon to be 12) win season, it would be hard to argue FOR benching him in place of Devlin.

I think many things worked against Devlin. For about, oh, I'd say 100 years, Penn State ran the vanilla pro-style offense. Take away the MRob season and Devlin was supposed to pick up the reigns and follow suit where all past PSU QB's have done --> drop back, hand-off or throw.

But having 4 good/great WR's, a power/speed RB, a pure speed RB...well, all things set up nicely for PSU to tinker with the spread offense, hense the vaunted "Spread HD" with Clark.

I'm sure in any other season besides the Clark years and Kerry Collins' years, Devlin would've won the job and performed very well. Fate didn't work out so well.

I'm just glad it's now rather than later. Also glad that PSU is doing the right thing and not screwing up his eligibility with transferring to the mighty Blue Hens.

But next years PSU team is probably going to start with a bare cupboard. They do lose quite a few key offensive weapons.

Actually sir, it should be "grammar," as there is no such word as "grammer." You should check yourself before you try to correct someone else for something as trivial as a spelling error on an internet forum. It makes you appear arrogant.

The Blue Hens? I have to find a T-shirt. That's almost as good as the Banana Slugs.

December 23, 2008  03:44 PM ET

Devlin thinks he is doing what is best for him, but I think it's a bad move. With PSU's top receivers graduating, the offense will be quite different next year. There was a good chance that he would have shared playing time with Clark because of the changes, and then the team would have been his the year after. Transferring during college because of playing time just means that you're bad at making decisions or not good enough to play.
I suppose him leaving is a good reason we landed Newsome though and it might work out for us in the end.

teams that split QB's never do well with the exception of florida with leak and tebow...and that really wasnt that great either...its better to have your clear cut starter and roll with them when your talking QB's

yep, the Leak/Tebow combination wasn't that great. I mean the only game they really did well in was that little old BCS National Championship game in which they "barely" beat "The Ohio State" U. sheez
