Reports: Teammate punched Browns' Quinn

Reports have surfaced that Browns defensive tackle Shaun Smith punched quarterback Brady Quinn in the face last week in the weight room after a verbal spat, and there are strong indications that the reports are true. WKYC's Jim Donovan reported the punch Sunday during the 6 p.m. news after word of an altercation broke on profootballtalk.com during the game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Then, Monday morning, Darnell Dinkins confirmed on WQAL FM/104.1 that a scuffle took place between the two and that Quinn had a mark on his face as a result, according to station general manager Chris Maduri. But one of the strongest signs that it really did happen was the fact that Crennel did not deny it Monday in his news conference. His most telling quote was, "If it happened, it stays in-house." Crennel also lent credence to the reports when he said Smith was inactive for Sunday's loss to the Bengals because of a coaches' decision. Smith didn't practice all week because of a calf injury and was listed as doubtful for the game, but that's not believed to be the reason he was idle -- at least not the whole reason.

Quinn has always been a jerk, during the draft process every one associated with him said he was a pain in the ****. Jamarcus Russell said he tried to shake his hand and talk to him but Quinn acted as if he had tracked in **** on new carpet:) Dude will never be as good as say Tim Couch or Heath Shuler, he has bust written all over him. Maybe he should go back to gay modeling:)

Cleveland=chaos. Where are all of those people who prior to the season were claiming the Browns would win the division?

December 23, 2008  07:46 AM ET

I guess the roid rage made him run up on a 300+ pound tackle.....

Quinn must have really said something that Smith had no comeback to, so he did the 4th grade thing and hit him... Grow up...

You sound like Brady Quinn himself... what do you think Quinn said to this man? Could it be something that he should not have said and he paid the price for making that comment?

People can say whatever they want... but there is a price to pay for certain comments.... Brady paid one to Smith.

At least Quinn is instilling a little bit of fight in his team.

December 23, 2008  08:30 AM ET

I don't care about his face. Just tell me his throwing hand is ok.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Shaun Smith was calling the people of Cleveland (I'm assuming Browns' fans) disgusting and Brady Quinn confronted him and Smith punched him. Regardless if that's the truth as to what happened.....it's very pathetic on Smith's behalf considering he did NOTHING for the Browns this year.

QUOTE(#11):

sounds to me like Quinn hasn't earned his team's respect. If he had, this wouldn't have happened. Smith would have backed down when the team "leader" stepped up....but they seem to perceive Quinn as a kid who hasn't done anything to earn his place yet....

The effects of choosing a fan favorite over an already proven quarterback they had in Alexander.....

If this is true, good for Quinn for stepping up. And bad for the rest of the team for letting it happen. Whether you like Quinn or not, he is going to be the starting QB for the future.

Quinn is garbage, win something and then he can talk and lead his team.

So you're saying Quinn is garbage for sticking up for Browns' fans? Wow....you obviously know nothing about being a natural leader.

First of all, no one knows what exactly transpired between Smith and Quinn. However, this much is known; Smith has an abrasive personality and has gotten into heated discussions with Fraley and Lewis this season. It is well documented that Smith is a trash talker who opens his pie hole during pre-game warm ups and never stops. His ranting is most often directed towards his teamates. For a guy who has done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING on defense this year to call out anyone is amazing. At least Quinn has the courage and guts to confront a over-sized underachiving THUG for his derogatory comments. That ladies and gentlemen is what leaders do.
1 Chico, obviously you know nothing about the Browns QB's: it was Anderson not Alexander who Quinn replaced.

this is stupid..I dont mind teammates fighting..just keeping between the lines when you have your pads and helmets on...anywhere else..its an assault.....we live in a civilized society where every one is equal...we are not barbarians....I say that if you strike a teammate ..outside the white lines..you should be suspended for the yr...and then this would stop.

Well said, Antonio the great. I'm pretty sure Shaun Smith will be released and sent on his way so he can continue his pathetic attempt at being a professional football player. Trash talking and not having the talent to back it up........yea.......that's Shaun Smith for ya!!

December 23, 2008  09:46 AM ET

Reports later stated that after the altercation Quinn was found in his bedroom silently crying and biting his pillow. When asked about the incident he replied " why does this always happen to me mom"?
