Report: Nats up Teixeira offer

As the Angels went into the bunker on Monday to begin exploring Plans B through Z and the Red Sox, Orioles and Yankees made no known major waves on the Mark Teixeira beachhead, the Nationals reportedly got busy spicing their proposal for the free-agent first baseman. A report on MASN Online by Roch Kubatko has multiple sources claiming that Washington has raised its offer, spread across eight years, to somewhere in the $178 million to $184 million range. What's more, there are indications that the Nationals might be talked into going to nine or even 10 years. A 10-year offer would fulfill agent Scott Boras' goal for Teixeira, delivered at the General Managers Meeting in Dana Point, Calif., in November. Widely considered the favorites in spite of a meeting on Thursday in Dallas that didn't go their way, the Red Sox reportedly have a proposal for eight years at anywhere from $165 to $180 million for Teixeira. The Orioles, the first baseman's hometown team, are believed to have offered seven years in the $140 million to $150 million range.

the red sox must now decide if they are going to match the nats or let teixeria go. if this offer is actually CONFIRMED, i feel the red sox will have all of the information they need to up their own offer.

it would be hard to believe that the red sox would let teixeira go because of a couple more million. if it comes down to 9 years or 10 years however, game, set, match washington. i seriously doubt the red sox are willing to go more than 8 years (which is already considered a long time by them)

and if the sox hope to avoid going more years, they their followup offer may have to be several million more than what the nats are offering per year to make up the differance. (23 million to 26 million per year for 8 years.)

my own personal opinion is that once (or if) the nats go 9 years, this contest is over.

come to think of it, the only way the nats can win this is by going more years than bostan, they should just get it over with an match the red sox current deal +1 year.

Do the Nats have the revenue to EVER be able to sign anyone else if they spend this much money on one player? Teixiera might want to think about that before he signs on the dotted line.

He doesn't care he just wants Borass to "show him the money" I say he goes to the Nads and does like Arod and makes sure he has a way to opt out in 3 years. I'm thinking they will end up going 10 years on him.

We shall see. One thing for sure, the DedSox are toast in 2009 without him. They wont make the playoffs. Also, whoever goes 10 years on him correct sir, will sign him. Thats sad though. How out of touch can one be to turn down 25 million over 8 years to be with a team that at least will be in the playoff hunt(Boston) every year, for $25 million over 10 years with Washington and suck every year. This guy is out of touch.

do you think he has any clue how people are looking at him. like do you think he is constantly watching espn and hearing all this or do u think boras is trying to keep him away from all of it cuz he is making him look like an arse. i wouldnt put it past boras

Furthermore I hope the Nationals suck the whole time he is there and that he just sits every post season on his couch watching the Sox and the Angels in the playoffs year after year.

If he goes to the Nats, he has officially sold his sole to the devil...

I can understand wanting to go to a "winning team" in Boston or LA, and can certainly understand wanting to play for your hometown team that you grew up rooting for. I cannot however understand going to play for the Expos, I mean Nats...

If the Nats raise it to over 180 million it's all over but the singing. I know this because I just had coffee and scones with Tiexeira's wife after a seance with Tiexeira's grandmother and they both confirmed he was looking for just a smidge more money. Now if you'll excuse me I have an early meeting with the Orioles' top brass to break the bad news and see if I can't get my hands on that physical report from last Thursday.

hahaha havent seen kingfish he past few days. i need some insider info!!

Nobody knows what teixeiera wants and thats all part of the boras fun.

as clear it would be to come people that he would want to contend with a winner every year and sign with the red sox, it makes just as much sense if he wanted to go to a team with no real star and become the face of the franchise, others seem to think he will just sign with whatever team offers him a couple more bucks with a free bus pass.

we dont know what he wants, the only thing we know for certain is that hes a boras client and hes going to get more expensive before he gets cheaper.

the real loser in all of this is boras's other clients who might as well be in the dog house so far. until teixeira signs with SOMEONE, they are being treated like a bunch of bums.

December 23, 2008  09:02 AM ET

it would be awesome if he signs w the nats for 10 years.

December 23, 2008  09:09 AM ET

Teixera is yesterdays, last weeks, last months Peavy! Enough already!

December 23, 2008  09:20 AM ET

if Tex signs with the Nats i will not respect him and hes just another greedy moron because if hes going to sign with the nats over more years or money then let him go disapeer in the nl and never be heard of again, what happen to the days where superstars took less money to play on a winning team
