Michigan's QB of the future?

Early last week, Wichita Falls (Texas) quarterback Shavodrick Beaver confirmed his plans to enroll early at Michigan. He knew the date he needed to be on campus to begin registration for classes and what day classes began. Three days later, the four-star prospect did an about-face, announcing he was staying closer to home for college. His destination? Not Texas or Oklahoma or LSU, but rather the University of Tulsa. That Michigan lost a commitment to Tulsa has caused consternation for many in the U-M fan base. The timing of Beaver's announcement leaves Michigan little time to find a suitable replacement, and that task is even more difficult since the majority of the best dual-threat quarterback prospects in the country have already picked schools. What has largely been lost in the aftermath of Beaver's decommitment, though, is that Michigan still has one of the nation's top dual-threat QBs waiting to enroll next month. San Diego's Tate Forcier is the No. 6 dual-threat quarterback in the country, according to Rivals.com, two spots ahead of Beaver. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Forcier runs 40 yards in 4.55 seconds and has completed better than 69% of his passes each of the last three seasons. Because Forcier is further along in his development, than Beaver, he was the odds-on favorite between the two to make an impact at quarterback next fall for the Wolverines. Still, recruiting observers in search of Beaver's replacement are convinced Michigan needs to pursue the likes of Tajh Boyd, a four-star dual-threat quarterback out of Virginia, or Raymond Cotton, another dual-threat who recently decommitted from Auburn.

Us Wolverine fans can only hope that Tate can ease into the QB slot and prove that he has the skills to guide Michigan back to it's old winning ways. It won't be smooth but UM doesn't have any many options after Threet and Forcier.

btw, Taj Boyd isn't an option for UM, imho. Sucknut fans think he's coming to OSU but he just came back from U of Oregon and was blown away with his visit. If I had to bet a dollar, I think he ends up at Oregon.

I'm no dual threat QB, but for the right kid, this is a golden opportunity. Sure, its a lot of pressure to turn UM around, but they are almost guaranteed to be better next year, and the QB who turns them around will look like a hero!

^I think people said the same thing about Jimmy Clausen.

Jimmy Clausen started 9 games as a true freshmen. With one of the worst offensive teams of all D 1 he didn't get much help in 2007. This year ND showed flashes of a good team, but no real upperclassmen to help lead on the field. Next year he'll be a Jr. & if can't show big strides (i.e. finish off games that ND has the lead, or to bring them back from behind) then he might not get his Sr year.

Now, as for Michigan, Tate Forcier is the type of QB RR wants to run his O. It might take him two years to be able to run the spread well. Good luck to UofM, I hope Forcies is your guy.

I don't think Michigan will sign another QB. I have heard nothing about any other recruits they are targeting. Unless RR breaks out the snake oil it looks like TATE will be "The Man"

Clausen should have come to Tennessee like his brothers did. Say what you want about this season but Tenn is light years ahead of Notre Dame at this point.

word,
I hate to say it but i think forcier might be kind of a streisand. He has a website with all of this barbie crap on it...he seems a little bit like a girl just like clausen.
I wanted Beaver more than any other QB in this class(aside from shepard of course).
I would not bet against the warden that Boyd is going to be a dope smokin duck

And why is that?

Michigan is looking at and will host at least one other QB, Denard Robinson from Florida on Jan 9th, I believe. And if you read the article, there are other possible preferred walk on at the QB position.

And make no mistake, RR needs another QB other than Tate.

December 23, 2008  10:10 AM ET

SO many were against Pickle Boy because he was/is an arrogant P-RICK and was the #1 player in the country. Tate is confident but in no way comes off as a jerk like Clausen did. Tate is going to really have to work hard and hopefully he'll have a more solid O line to protect him.

December 23, 2008  10:15 AM ET

I hope the RR that SOB burns in hell.

Have you seen the film on Denard Robinson? The kid is lightning fast but not a very strong arm. The last thing Michigan needs to hope for is a walk to have a break out season (look back no Nick Sheridans' season). I will not argue with you that Michigan needs to find competition for Tate. Being a Michigan QB MUST be earned not given.

Light years??? What are you smoking?!! What happened the last time TN & ND played????

Now you have a new coach, and for two years all Vol's fans will say is "wait till Lane gets HIS recruits!"

Light years?? Why don't you light up your crack pipe again!

December 23, 2008  10:54 AM ET

Wow, a guy says something and then does an about-face and does the opposite? Sound familiar Richy Rich Rod?

December 23, 2008  11:06 AM ET

We don't want him anyway if he can't stand a little competition for the starting QB job then he wouldn't be able to handel the pressure of plying in the Big House!

December 23, 2008  11:18 AM ET

When was the last time ND was relevant to anyone? Probably when Lou Holtz was there. Tennessee is still in the discussion. They will be back to 8+ wins next year. ND probably never will. That's why TN is light years ahead of ND.

December 23, 2008  11:56 AM ET

Tough luck UM.

December 23, 2008  11:58 AM ET

This is a daggar to the heart of UM's RichRod, considering Beaver picked Tulsa--whose head coach Graham and asst. head coach Hand both were Rodriquez assistants at West Virginia before leaving several years ago.

Take that RichRod!
