Wells short on Jays optimism

Even the Jays' level-headed center fielder Vernon Wells, usually a human shot of sunshine, has trouble seeing the usual reasons for optimism heading into the new year. "It's going to be challenging, given how well Tampa's been able to do and how well they did last year," Wells said from his Texas home. "Given the acquisitions the Yankees have made so far -- and obviously they may not be done yet -- and with Boston in the same division, it will be difficult."

Give them a chance and they'll find a way to tie it in!

I guess this guy forgot that last year, Tampa won the division. And they should be just as good, if not better, in 2009. And they're young.

I can't blame him for feeling pessimistic for Toronto's chances, though.

I wonder if the Yanks have talked to the Jays about trading for Wells...that could solve our CF issues pretty quickly.

December 23, 2008  11:36 AM ET

Yes, three teams in their own division are all contenders and they are not...

No he didn't, he said: '"It's going to be challenging, given how well Tampa's been able to do and how well they did last year," Wells said from his Texas home. "Given the acquisitions the Yankees have made so far -- and obviously they may not be done yet -- and with Boston in the same division, it will be difficult."'

if you see there, he mentions Tampa FIRST...

Doesn't Wells have a $100 million contract?
If you can't find some optimism while getting paid that much...find a new job Vernon.
Everyone starts off on equal footing come opening day.

December 23, 2008  01:01 PM ET

The Tonto Booyahs are one of the worst franchises to root or play for. Stick to some fond memories and play hard, some day you'll come in third in the AL East again.

Fifteen years ago not only were they winning championships, they were THE team to play for. They had a higher payroll than the Yanks, they conducted themselves well and created an atmosphere off the field that made players and their families long to play here.

But now? JP is the antithesis of the classy, dignified way they used to do business

December 23, 2008  02:25 PM ET

I don't like their uniforms.

December 23, 2008  02:58 PM ET

lol your comments are laughable trace...you must be so proud watching your mariners win ABSOLUTELY nothing in the same time toronto has been in existence. we put competitive teams on the field in a crazy division... you are 30 games below .500 in the al west every other year!? PA-THET-TIQUE you ****.bag

Yea the Mariners don't have a prayer for third. The Seahawks maybe have a shot a third. The Sonics oh wait you don't have them anymore

Congrats Vernon for having the parts to say what others are thinking. Baseball is desperately in need of a cap to even the playing field. Just imagine what the boys on the O's, Nats and Pirates are thinking........way to go Vernon.

December 23, 2008  08:22 PM ET

I disagree with Vernon.
The Jays had the best pitching in the league (in '08) in the toughest division in baseball (both starting and relief). Sure, they lost Marcum and Burnett, but they have Accardo, Janssen and MacGowan coming back. They have such a deep bullpen, they could easily have one or two of their bullpen guys step into the rotation. They have Halladay (who makes everyone better), and some young guys that are coming into their own (Litsch, Purcey and Richmond). They have the best pitching coach in the league (Arnsberg). Their pitching will be fine.
Now, about the hitting. A lot of these guys are due to have years that reflect their normal production, and some could be due for career years. Cito and the coaches are great at getting the most production out of their hitters. Hill is coming back. He's a solid hitter with pop.
Their defence is stellar. Their expectations are low, they'll be loose. They just may suprize all of us.

How is Wells supposed to have optimism in that division?

It's been absolutely brutal for years and the Yankees just made it even more brutal for the next few years. The Blue Jays would have gone to the playoffs a few times in the last 15 years if they had been in any other division. I don't envy Toronto or Baltimore having to play in that division. Tampa has a few years until the lack of good draft picks and departing free agents catches up to them.
