Rutgers cracking South Jersey recruiting

Back in February 2005, when coach Greg Schiano was evaluating Rutgers' latest recruiting class on letter-of-intent signing day, he was asked at the press conference if there was anything he wasn't pleased with when it came to his latest talent haul. He still remembers his response. "I said, 'Yeah, we haven't been able to crack South Jersey,'" Schiano recalled after practice Monday. That was then. It definitely isn't now. Rutgers' starting lineup for Monday's Papajohns.com Bowl against North Carolina State will feature six starters from South Jersey: middle linebacker Ryan D'Imperio (Washington Township High), defensive tackle Alex Silvestro (Paulsboro), defensive end George Johnson (Glassboro), fullback Jack Corcoran (St. Joseph's of Hammonton), center Ryan Blaszczyk (Shawnee) and tailback Kordell Young (West Deptford). Next year's incoming freshman class features four more South Jersey players -- and that's not counting linebacker Marcus Witherspoon, the transfer from Michigan who was one of the state's premier players as a senior at Holy Spirit in Absecon.

Hate to point out a negative RU fans, but a counter to this story is the fact Schiano just a lost a prior verbal commit from a stud, Hodges, Paulsboro High School in South Jersey.

Good move keeping kids at home from going elsewhere when you got a winning attitude on a team
