Crennel may be fired soon

Romeo Crennel anticipates he'll get a chance to state his case in front of Browns owner Randy Lerner to try to keep his job. "He's the owner, and he's got a lot of different things he's got to consider and look at," said Crennel. "He'll make that determination in January after the season's over. At that time, when I get the chance to sit down and talk with him, then I can make my case. And he's going to have to decide whether I've made a good-enough case and whether he wants to stay with me in this job." There's some thought Crennel could be fired shortly after Sunday's season finale in Pittsburgh, which wouldn't give him time to try to defend himself.

The one coach I was rooting for to keep his job

A good guy, but he is gone.

Being a good guy is was what killed him as a head coach.

Unfortunate. Well, Bill Belichek didn't start his head coaching career well in cleveland either.

December 23, 2008  10:47 AM ET

This is not a racist comment, but I think some players take advantage of a black HC, and that makes it more difficult for them. Just my opionion

To be determined in January? I think Jabba the Crennel will be fired on December 29th (Happy New Year you're fired!), which is the day after the last scheduled game of the season. Which is also the day after the Browns lose to the Steelers (who will be playing their scrubs which the Browns starters won't even beat). This will make Jabba the Crennels record against the Steelers an ever impressive 0-8. Bottom line is that if you cannot beat the Steelers in 4 seasons, then you will not keep your job.

Also, farewell to you too Phil Savage.

December 23, 2008  12:55 PM ET

Finally!

I think a more aggressive coach will do a better job in Cleveland!

December 23, 2008  01:13 PM ET

Crennel is a **** of a coach, he's a hellva coordinator but as a head coach he's out of his league.

December 23, 2008  02:04 PM ET

Crennel is an over priced equipment manager. His successes were with teams like N England where Belichick called the defensive shots and with the giants where Parcells and belichick called the shots when they weren't screaming at Crennel for more coffee. This is cruel but true..Nice guys finish last..Crennel is too nice..can't be to passive of a babysitter these days to these egos

no, but that is probably where he gained his fashion sense. it's not just everywhere that you can get a hoodie with cut off sleeves.

I think the meeting will go something like this: "Romeo, we need to let you go. In this economy we just can't afford to purchase two seats on the plane for you anymore. Besides, Juliet wants you to come home."

Cennel may just end up back in NE after they toss out Dean Pees - who really must go - but don't expect Weis back. Josh McDaniels has been far better than Weis was, plus, my guess is that he is Belichick's successor. Plus Weis was obsessed with being a head coach. He'll never go back to being a coordinator, even if Notre Dame canned, which they won't.

I agree with the canned list. But I think Mangini is on that list - win or lose on Sunday. Dick Jauron is definitely hearing steps, but I think Buffalo will ultimately keep him. Sean Payton and Brad Childress aren't on the hot seat this season, especially if Minnesota takes the NFC North. Andy Reid is probably gone, too.

What about Gary Kubiak in Houston? Singletary in San Fran? The heat is also on Zorn in Wash and Gruden in Tampa. Been a looooong time since SB XXXVII.

December 24, 2008  12:30 PM ET

Here we go again....someone will say he is being fired because he is black, not because of his teams failures.

December 24, 2008  01:02 PM ET

Cowher as new HC and Shottenheimer as GM come 2009

Alot of these guys just signed extensions, so even though they probably SHOULD get fired, they won't due to the economics of the times. Buying our their contracts AND signing a new HC gets pricey.
