Red Sox eyeing Mauer in 2011

As the Mark Teixeira free-agent negotiations go, so might go the market for Joe Mauer, who can become a free agent after the 2010 season. Teixeira, 28, is seeking a deal in excess of $20 million a season. Mauer, 25, the Twins' two-time batting champion and Gold Glove catcher, next season will be the Twins' third-highest paid player at $10.5 million. He'll make $12.5 million in 2010. People in the know say the Boston Red Sox already are salivating over Mauer, who would be only 27 as a free agent. There have been no talks this winter about extending the St. Paul native's contract, in part because Mauer's value after last season is at a premium, and it's uncertain whether the seismic downturn in the nation's economy will affect baseball salaries a year from now. What is for sure is that the Mauer contract negotiations will be the biggest and most important in Twins history.

expect this guy being in a red sox uniform in 2011, with the way things are going, the red sox are going to be able to re-sign varitek on their terms which will allow them to patch up their catching until they can pick up this guy.

And Red Sox fans call the Yankees "the Evil Empire"? Give me a break. I hope Barack Obama's "share the wealth" stuff trickles all the way down to Major League Baseball, or pretty soon the Red Sox and Yankees spending habits are going to completely ruin the league for the other 28 teams.

Are we really contemplating who is gonna be a free agent 2 years from now. I can understand next year maybe but 2 years away alot can change.

dude calm down. this is a writer trying to get responces like yours by putting up a story that has no merit or truth. it sonly because the sox need a catcher. if the yanks or cubs or any other big market team needed a catcher it would be there name in the headline. that being said i am 100% conifdent that he will be on the red sox!!!

Yes, with bad intent.

December 23, 2008  08:20 AM ET

Who cares about this. By then the Rangers will be a powerhouse on their way to their 2nd straight ring. It doesn't matter what any team does.

December 23, 2008  08:21 AM ET

This just in the Dodgers are interested in pursuing Arod when he becomes a free agent in 2017 they think he will be a good fit.

December 23, 2008  08:24 AM ET

I see you there, Walrus. Stop eyeing my Mauer.

December 23, 2008  08:32 AM ET

A few things. First off, the Sox were 76,000,000 less in payroll than NY. Second, the Sox don't spend money like drunken sailors like NY does. Watch the AJ Burnett deal blow up, at 82,000,000.

December 23, 2008  08:36 AM ET

Bravo, a perfect Red Sox fit..Forget Salty and go for Mauer...Perfect. Great plan...

December 23, 2008  08:45 AM ET

2011. I think they better look for someone a year or two before then. Varitek just got his Life Alert pendant in the mail.

Currently the Yanks are 38 mil less then last year even with the CC and Brunett signings. Next year another 32 comes off (5 mil buyout to Giambi this year, Damon, Matsui).
I love how a couple of years ago the Sox left out the 50 million they paid to talk to Dice K as salary when making argumens like this.
Somehow I don't think the Royals are looking at these teams saying, "If the Yanks only spent as much as the Sox we could compete".
I wasn't crazy about the Brunett signing either. Too injury prone for that kind of money

His batting average has fallen, and it won't get up.
